Question about 1995 Mitsubishi Diamante

Hi working on a 95 mitt.diamante 3.0..its been nothing but troulbe..i replaced the head gaskets and belive i installed time belt off timed..pullled heads back 0ff and had a machine shop go through and replace some valves and arms put all back together and had it running but rough "a miss fire in one cylinder" in the number one cylinder i have no compression .all elsen are good do u know why

Hi there:Removal and InstallationExcept Accord V-6


The cylinder head temperature must be below 100 degrees F (38 degrees C); allow the engine to cool several hours if the car has been recently driven. Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the number one piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
  4. Label and remove the brake booster, PCV and charcoal canister vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.
  5. Remove the engine ground cable from the cylinder head or valve cover.
  6. Relieve the fuel pressure using the proper procedure. Disconnect the fuel lines.
  7. Disconnect the accelerator cable at the throttle body or carburetor. On automatic transaxle vehicles, also disconnect the throttle control cable.
  8. Disconnect and tag all the wire harnesses and vacuum hoses from the cylinder head, intake manifold and throttle body/carburetor. Disconnect the spark plug wires, then position them aside.
  9. Disconnect the upper radiator hose. Remove the heater hoses from the cylinder head.
  10. If equipped, remove the cruise control actuator. Do not disconnect the cable; move the actuator out of the work area with the cable attached.
  11. Remove accessory drive belts.
  12. Disconnect the inlet hose from the power steering pump and plug the hose immediately to prevent fluid leakage. Remove the power steering pump from the cylinder head and position it aside.

When the power steering hose is disconnected, the fluid will flow out. Cover the alternator with a shop towel to prevent the fluid from leaking into it.

  1. If the alternator is mounted to the cylinder head, remove it.
  2. Remove the power steering and alternator brackets if they are mounted on the cylinder head.
  3. Remove the distributor. Be sure to scribe a line relating the position of the distributor to the engine for easy installation.
  4. If equipped, remove the cylinder sensor next to the distributor.
  5. Remove the valve cover.
  6. Remove the timing belt.

Do not crimp or bend the timing belt.

  1. Remove the exhaust header pipe nuts and the header pipe bracket (if equipped). Pull the pipe away from the exhaust manifold.
  2. If equipped, remove the EGR crossover and air suction pipes.
  3. On Accords through 1989 and Preludes through 1991, the cylinder head can be removed with the intake and exhaust manifolds either still attached or removed. On other models, the manifolds should be removed first.
  4. On some engines, it will be necessary to remove the camshaft holders, camshafts and rocker arms to access the cylinder head bolts. If so, refer to the proper procedures in this section.
  5. Remove the cylinder head bolts in sequence (take notice of any bolt holes occupied by longer bolts). Failure to follow this procedure may cause the head to warp.
    1. On 1984-89 Accords and 1984-91 Preludes, work from the ends toward the center. Loosen each bolt about 1 / 2 turn each time and make several passes to release the tension evenly.
    2. On 1990-95 Accords and 1992-95 Preludes, follow the loosening sequence shown in the illustrations. Loosen each bolt about 1/3 turn each time. Repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.

24. Remove the cylinder head. The head may resist removal, even with the bolts out. Tap the edge of the head with a plastic or rubber mallet; lift the head straight up to remove it.
  1. Remove the cylinder head gasket and clean the mating surfaces.
  1. If applicable, remove the intake and exhaust manifolds from the cylinder head.

To install:
  1. Install a new head gasket on the engine, making certain it is positioned correctly. The cylinder head dowel pins and the oil jet must be in place. Refer to the illustrations if necessary.
  2. Install the head. Lower it straight down onto the block, aligning it correctly.
  3. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and the contact face of the bolt head. Install the head bolts finger-tight.
  4. On all models except 1988-89 DOHC Prelude and 1992-95 Preludes with 2.3L and VTEC engines, tighten the head bolts following sequence A. On 1988-89 DOHC Preludes, use sequence B. Use sequence C on 1992-95 Preludes with 2.3L and VTEC engines.
    1. On 1984-89 Accords and 1984-91 Preludes, tighten the bolts in two passes. The first pass should bring the bolts to about 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). On the second pass, tighten the bolts to their final torque of 49 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
    2. On 1990-93 Accords, tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) on the first pass, 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) on the second pass, then tighten the bolts to their final torque of 78 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
    3. On 1994-95 Accords and 1992-95 Preludes, the bolts are also tightened in three passes. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) on the first pass, 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) on the second pass, then tighten the bolts to their final torque of 72 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

  1. If applicable, assemble the intake and exhaust manifolds to the head. Use new gaskets.
  2. If applicable, install the cam, rockers and camshaft holders.
  3. If equipped, install the EGR crossover and air suction pipes.
  4. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold using new nuts.
  5. Install the timing belt.
  6. Install the valve cover.
  7. Install the cylinder sensor (if equipped) and the distributor.
  8. If applicable, install the alternator.
  9. Install the power steering pump, then connect the inlet hose to the pump.
  10. Install the accessory drive belts. Adjust the belt tensions.
  11. Install the heater hoses.
  12. Install the cruise control actuator if it was removed.
  13. Connect the spark plug wires. Connect all the wire harnesses and vacuum hoses to the cylinder head, intake manifold and throttle body/carburetor.
  14. Connect the throttle control cable and/or accelerator cable at the throttle body.
  15. Connect the fuel lines.
  16. Install the brake booster, PCV and charcoal canister vacuum hoses.
  17. Install the air cleaner and intake duct.
  18. Refill the engine coolant. It is recommended that the engine oil be changed whenever a cylinder head is removed.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20. Start the engine, allowing it to idle. Bleed the cooling system. Check the work area carefully for any signs of fluid leakage or any indication of the timing belt rubbing or slapping the covers

REMOVAL

1. Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose.
2. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the head cover).
3. Remove the air-intake hose.
4. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose.
5. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion.
6. Remove the ignition coil.
7. Remove the power steering oil pump and bracket.
8. Remove the intake manifold.
9. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifold assembly.
10. Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the timing belt cover.
12. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.
13. Remove the timing belt.
14. Remove the head cover.


15. Remove the cylinder head assembly. The cylinder head bolts should be removed by using Special Tool, Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221-32001) or equivalent, in the sequence as shown in the illustration in two or three steps.
16. Remove the gasket pieces from the cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in the engine.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head.
2. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder head assembly. Apply sealant to the gasket and do not reuse the old cylinder head gasket.


3. Install the cylinder head bolts. Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head bolts in sequence as shown in illustration, using the Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221 - 32001) or equivalent. Repeat the procedure, re-tightening all cylinder head bolt to the specified torque. (torque spec is Cold Engine 105-115 Nm (76-83 ft lb) )
4. Install the timing belt tensioner pulley.
5. Install the timing belt on the camshaft sprocket, making sure that the tension side is tightened by turning the camshaft sprocket in reverse, all timing marks are in alignment.
6. Adjust the timing according to "Timing Belt"
7. Install the rocker cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Rocker cover belt:

2.5-3.5 Nm (25-35 kg.cm, 2-3 ft. lbs.)

8. Install the timing belt cover.
9. Install the new intake manifold gasket and the intake manifold. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
10. Install the new exhaust manifold gasket and the exhaust manifold. Tighten the exhaust manifold attaching nuts to the specified torque.
11. Install the surge tank and tighten the nuts bolts to the specified torque.
12. Install the power steering oil pump and bracket.
13. Install the ignition coil.
14. Install the air intake hose.
15. Connect the vacuum hose, fuel hose and water hose.
16. Install breather hose.

Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) including air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) .
  1. Loosen drive belt tensioner (6B209). Remove drive belts (8620) .
  1. If LH cylinder head (6049) is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766) .
    1. Remove power steering pump front mounting bracket retaining bolts.
    1. Remove generator (GEN) (10346) and belt idler pulley (8678).
    1. Remove power steering pump/generator bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected, place pump/bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
  1. If RH cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove drive belts .
    1. If equipped with A/C, remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected and position A/C compressor (19703) aside.
    1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424) .
  1. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  1. Remove fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
  1. Remove lower intake manifold as outlined.
  1. Remove exhaust manifolds (9430) as outlined.
  1. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow rocker arm (6564) to be lifted off the push rod (6565) and rotate to one side.
  1. Remove push rods . Identify position of each push rod . Push rods should be installed in their original position during assembly.
  1. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
  1. Remove cylinder heads .
  1. Remove and discard old head gaskets (6051) .
Installation
  1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolts and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
    Clean cylinder head, intake manifold , valve cover (6582) and head gasket surfaces. If cylinder head was removed for head gasket replacement, check flatness and sealing areas for scratches of cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces. Refer to Section 03-00 for procedure.
  2. Position new head gaskets onto cylinder block (6010) using cylinder head to block dowels (6A008) for alignment.

  10. Install exhaust manifolds as outlined.
  11. Install lower intake manifold as outlined.
  12. Install fuel injection supply manifold .
  13. Position valve cover and new valve cover gasket (6584) on cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft).
  14. Install upper intake manifold .Install spark plugs (12405) , if removed.
  15. Connect ignition wires to the spark plugs .
  16. If LH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install generator/power steering pump mounting bracket.
    1. Install generator .
    1. Install main accessory drive belt tensioner .
    1. Install power steering pump (3A674) .
    1. Install power steering pump support bracket.If RH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
    1. If equipped with A/C, install A/C compressor mounting brackets (2882) and A/C compressor .
  17. Install drive belt and tighten to specification.
  18. Connect battery ground cable .
  19. Install air cleaner outlet tube.

2001 Mitsubishi Diamante water pump location


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt Alternator brace from the water pump Timing belt rear cover Water pump mounting bolts Water pump, gasket and O-ring

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the water inlet pipe. Coat the O-ring with water or coolant. Do not allow oil or other grease to contact the O-ring. Water pump to the engine block, with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm) Alternator brace on the water pump. Torque the brace pivot bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Timing belt rear cover Timing belt Remaining components
  2. Refill the engine with coolant.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

install:
  1. The cylinder head should be cleaned and inspected prior to installation.
  2. Lightly oil all bolt and stud bolt threads before installation.
  3. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  4. Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block. WARNING Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing the cylinder head or damage to the engine may occur.
  5. Install the cylinder head on the cylinder block.
  6. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in reverse of the removal sequence. Tighten the 2004 cylinder head bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten an additional 70°, plus 70°, plus another 50°. Tighten 2005 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten an additional 60°, plus 60°, plus another 10°.
  7. Install the right engine mount. Tighten the engine mount attaching bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • Intake manifold
    • Intake manifold support bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Throttle cable
    • Surge tank coolant hose
    • Heater hose to cylinder head
    • Fuel feed line at the fuel rail
    • All vacuum hoses
    • Exhaust manifold
    • Rear timing belt cover
    • Timing belt tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Idler pulley. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Intake and exhaust camshaft gears. Tighten the bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  9. Apply a small amount of gasket sealant to the corners of the front camshaft caps and the top of the rear camshaft cover-to-cylinder head seal.
  10. Install the valve cover using a new gasket
  11. Align the timing marks on the camshaft gears.
  12. Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.
  13. Install the timing belt and rotate the water pump clockwise to apply tension to the timing belt.
  14. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  15. Adjust the timing belt tension.
  16. Install or connect the following:
    • Spark plug wires
    • Upper and lower timing belt coversCrankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm), plus an additional 30°, then another 15°.
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Air cleaner housing
    • Radiator hoses
    • Front splash shield
    • Right front wheel
    • Coolant temperature sensor
    • Fuel feed line from fuel rail
    • IAT sensor
    • Intake manifold pressure sensor
    • DIS coil connector
    • Fuel injector connectors
    • ECM ground terminal
    • Negative battery cable
  17. Fill the engine with oil and coolant.

I have a 98 mitsubishi diamante that overheated now the car wont start and when i crank it it sounds like the timing is of it whines


Sounds like it may have blown a head gasket, and or craked/warped a cylinder hear or engine block. If possible, pull all six spark plugs and look for evidence of engine coolant on the electrode.

Shot timing belt on 95 900 SE Saab


Your post mentions a belt in the title and then a chain in the text. If V-6, it is a belt, if 2.0 turbo, it is a chain. In either case, these are interference engines, meaning that the pistons will make contact with any valves stuck in the open position. Accordingly, there is head work involved when the timing is catastrophically interrupted. A very good repair will involve taking the engine out to remove the cover so that new guides can be installed for the chain and also the head will have to be pulled and some valves replaced. If damage to piston crowns occured, you may need one or two of these. Some shops have figured out how to weasel the engine around to remove the cover without full engine removal, saving some time. I do not think you can get out of this for under $3,000.00, unless you find a cheap used engine and do a simple swap. Even then, it will be close.
