No, not unless the alternator is very small and you have a large battery that is well down in charge. The ideal alternator to battery size is 25%. This means that if the battery is 100 amp hour in size it should have at least a 25amp alternator. The problem only really arises in an RV or boat where a large house battery bank has been installed but the alternator size has not been addressed to cope. The damage done would be caused by an alternator working too hard and over heating.

    The ouput from an alternator is determined by the battery, not the alternator. The less the battery resistance the greater the output in terms of amperage. A flat battery has low resistance and therefore the amperage will be high. as the battery charge comes up, the resistance becomes greater and the amperage from the alternator will drop off. If a battery is faulty due to an internal short circuit, the resistance will be low and the alternator output will be high and can be to a degree where the alternator will overheat and burn out. So - to determine an answer, you need to be more precise as to what went wrong in the alternator in just 4 weeks - a short circuit, overheating or burnt out diodes. I appreciate you may not know the answer to these questions but that will be the only way.span.jajahWrapper { font-size:1em; color:#B11196; text-decoration:underline; } a.jajahLink { color:#000000; text-decoration:none; } span.jajahInLink:hover { background-color:#B11196; }

Hooked up battery wrong and blew the fusible link. Replaced the link. now car starts but alternator not putting out and the left kick panel fuses are dead. any ideas on how to fix would be greatly...

May have blown some fuses under the hood. Check for an alternator maxi fuse, also a fuse that sends power to the fuse panel, or that might be another fusible link for the panel. You may need the alternator tested, might have ruined that, also.

I have a 78 mgb the head lights, turn signals, gas gage, and rpm gage, don't work. We have checked wiring and fuses but can't find anything. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Ignition switch? Battery?: Voltage correct? Battery size and type correct? (Other owners\' restore screw-ups? Kids?) Fuses correct amperage?: Power surge? Items themselves ruined/burned out? Stripped or exposed wiring--intermittent? Water vs. electrical. Dirt/contamination? Fuse box and connectors? Horn work? Starts, of course? Alternator? Alternator cables? Belt? (Hummm: Alternator--often a fine bet for small car trouble--big car, truck, or powerful car alternators, V8 or V6/6 cyl. always prove better. Small car/cheap car alternator? Old MG alternator--time to replace/re-coil? Dirty alternator? Your alternator proves worthy of crucifixion?!) My 94 montero keeps draining battery. the battery and alternator is good. i can drive it , but the battery gauge gets lower and it drains completly. the 4wheel drive indicator light starts flashing right...

You say the alternator is good, but it sounds like it is not charging the battery. Have you had the charging system tested on the truck ?
Could be the main fuse for the alternator. Its usually large, 80 or 100 amp in size.

Get the battery and alternator checked, your symptoms are common on fords when the electrical system in underpowered, usually caused by a battery that is going down either due to age, usage, or alternator problems. If it is the battery, you need to get this checked or it will ruin the alternator, and vice-versa. Any commercial auto parts store will check these for free.

305 engine --The volts gage is dropping-- HELP

The gauge could be wrong,it could be defective, have the alternator checked,at the battery,it should read from 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts with the head lights on,and the ac blower on high, with the engine running. If the alternator is new, check for 12 volts at the back of the alternator with engine off,if there is not 12 volts on the large wire,on the alternator, then the circuit is broken somewhere.Just install a new wire,of equal or larger size.Leave the original wire on the alternator, and just add a new wire, larger would be better if possible, and run it from the alternator,to the positive side of the battery,it will fix the problem.

I've replaced the battery and the alternator on my 2003 Isuzu Rodeo. But when traveling for several hours with headlights on the battery will go dead and the alternator won't charge till it cools off....

Sounds like there's still something wrong with the charging system. Did you verify alternator output?
(Volts/amps) Should charge at about 13.5 - 14.5 volts when engine at medium idle. About 65 amps w/o a/c, about 85 amps with a/c. If you've got the non a/c alt in a vehicle with a/c, amps falling short may cause intermittent charging/problems.

Does engine exhaust leak blow on alternator? Had this symptom before-it can ruin your alternator also.

Battery going dead-either the battery won't HOLD a charge or the alternator is not charging it. One or the other is your problem. Verify alternator output as described earlier, then need to do a LOAD test on the battery with a full charge.

Hope this helps.

The battery of my car does not charge and I put

The main wire from the alternator to the battery is not making connection, just run another one to the positive side of the battery,to the large wire on the alternator, leave the other one on the alternator, just add this one,use as big of wire,or larger,a small cable will do nicely.

Electrical/Battery Light

Hi,I am Ron,Look at the alternator out put voltage, and have the battery load tested. Also check bad connection from battery to alternator(this is the large wire/cable).alternator turns the battery light on,why? You need to figure out witch one.A diode could be going out in the alternator, diodes change ac voltage to dc voltage ,that`s why the call it a alternator(alternating current)AC voltage means alternating current. If it goes unrepaired it can ruin battery, changing battery voltage from 12 volts dc to 12 volts ac.Also there is a built in voltage regulator that holds voltage down to about 14 volts charging while car is running.Voltage regulators can cut off charging completley or open wide allowing alternator to charge as much as 18 volts dc,ruining battery(boiling battery acid out of battery)and ruining alternator by burning fields and rectifiers out.So have it checked or do it your self.Auto parts stores can check alternator and battery. If I can be of more help, please ask.roniecon@gmail.com
