2002 jeep wrangler 4.0 auto will not start, maybe shift sensor??
Had problem before, turn key, nothing happens. Shift out of park into neutral, and shift back to park with a littel force and it usually would start. However, now it will not start. Maybe a sensor in the shifter line? Do not know. Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what was resolution? Any help would be appreciated. Mike in New York.

Neutral safety switch is either bad or out of adjustment. On stickshift cars, usually found above clutch pedal. On automatics, aw4 trans is on passenger side of trans, On 727 Chrysler trans it's on the top left rear edge of trans casting just above the pan.

There is a safety switch on the brake pedal and if it fails you cannot move the gear shift lever. Check under the dash on the brake pedal shaft for the switch and make sure it is not loose, disconnected, damaged or failed.
what does that mean, it has no clear meaning at all.
first is car a auto or stick (mines a stick)
stays in gear can mean many things,,,
1: A/t shift lever stuck in drive, you never said what gear,?
2: M/t sticks shift car, , the car moves in gear, with clutch held to floor.
i cant shift to neutral?
I cant shift to park.
I cant what? be clear. please
The shifter cable has broken more than likely ,Find the shift shaft on the transmission,,block the wheels and remove the shift cable from the shift shaft, put the gear shift in park, then shift the shift shaft in park, then it will start,Then of course you will have to replace the shift cable.
I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel
