Question about 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab

2 Answers

Hi, My 97, SS/T ,360 has just over 100,000 miles. Never tuned. Well maitained though. Stopped at store on way home from work. When I can out and started the engine it was missing and the engine light came on. So I installed new dist cap and rotor and plugs. Aftermarket parts. Not factory. Cap and rotor were burnt but the plugs didn't look bad. It ran great for two days and then started missing again. And I noticed the temp gauge was at 225. I have heard that I may have a cracked head. It's not down on water. And I don't see white comeing out the exhaust. And I don't have moisture in the oil. Can you enlighten me? I'm stumped.... Thanks.

Thank you. Installed new cap, rotor, and wires from dealer and runs good now. Still runs over 200 though. Not sure if this is a problem or not. Think I will change the thermostat and go from there. Thanks again.

You may also check to see that you had not accidentally pinched the wires from the crank sensor that is housed within the cap.

did you check for trouble codes? sounds like your engine has a cylinder mis-fire issue

great. about your t'stat change, consider buying one with a cooler opening temp. factory stock t'stat opens coolant flow at 195 deg. installing a 180 deg t'stat will keep your engine running cooler and it wont cause a problem with your ecu. also when you install the t'stat, make sure you place the gasket on top of the t'stat. kinda weird, chilton's "full size trucks 1997-00" manual says that is the proper way for a t'stat replacement.

Well check the plug wires to ensure they are propperly connected and also check the cap for a crack manufature problem as well as make sure that the cap is completely clean inside you may have gotten dirt or dust in the cap double check thats all

I have a 2008Chevy Impala SS that just had a tune up a week ago. Today I start it and it would go, but then it just stopped accelerating altogether. It;s NEVER done that and as I said the tune up is a week...

Is the check engine light on ?
If you have no acceleration, the problem could be low fuel pressure or a sensor problem. If a sensor fails, the check engine light should come on.

I have a 97 ford festiva and when i go to take off the cars stalls i have chaged fuel pump fillters and fuel regalter

I would recommend having a pro look at it and see if you may need new fuel injectors. If the car seam's as though you are loosing power when you take off it could be quite a few different things. It could also need new plugs distribute r cap and rotor wires . If you have not tuned it up in a while it wont hurt to do that any way because you should get a tune up every year or 12'000 miles.

May have cracked head?????

did you check for a touble code? there should be a diagnostic plug underneath your dash on your driver side. obtain a code reader that reads both obd I and II codes. with the '97 production there were rams made with 2 different systems. you can obtain touble codes by either plugging in an obd II code reader which was/is the updated method, or the older method of (with your key) turning the ignition on/off/on/off/on again and if a code is stored in the ecu memory, your check engine light will flash in a series. the number of flashes determines the code present. copy the number of flashes and look the values up in a trouble code manual. or find a website that features troble code definitions. if your truck is drivable, the cheap route is to go to autozone, or a similar auto parts store and ask an employee to plug in their code reader. they will do this for free. they should be able to pinpoint the problem if your ecu detected a malfunction. otherwise, did you perform a compression test? check all cylinders for good compression at least 100psi each. you can buy a tester at a parts store for about 25-30 bucks. when you installed your new cap and rotor did you check to make sure the rotor was seated properly and pointing in the right direction? ignition timing can be fouled up if you didnt mark the location of the old rotor and install the new one the exact same place. replaceing cap/rotor on the ram magnums are a ***** because you cant reach them easily. did you chack to see that the plug wires were install in the correct terminals? and again at the block??
