While driving, 2002 Jeep Cherokee starts to sputter and shake. If I turn it off and crank it back up it runs good. Happens 2 or 3 times each morning now. Started doing this after transmission was replaced and new battery was installed. Changing the plugs and coil did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

SOURCE: 2000 jeep cherokee starts then stalls in approx 3 sec 4.0 has new crank sensor

I am going to assume that it will not run even if you push on the accelerator pedal?
Can you install or attach an old timing light to the spark plug wires, turn it one and try to start it. The light should flash with the engine running, but if it shuts off at time of engine die, and the engine is still spinning, you are losing spark, My suggestion is the cranks shaft sensor on bell housing.
Second, install a pressure gage on the test port on the fuel rail and watch it as you start the engine, fuel pressure should not drop as the engine dies, if it does, the pump is not working correctly. There are two modes of power to that pump, one to start and timed, for only a few seconds to prime the system, and one to run continuously. Find the wires going to the pump at the tank. Connect test light to those wires and watch what happens during crank and at stall, You should not have the pump shut off and the engine dies.
If you have spark, and fuel pump working, when did you last change the filter,,but I put that LAST.
It has to be one or the other of these.
Good Luck

You say you changed the cam sensor. A1391 code is a crank sensor on the top of the trans. bell housing.

SOURCE: 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Won't start

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

After you crank it for a while, take out one of the spark plugs. If it is dry then you have a fuel issue. If it is wet and smells like gas you have a spark issue. Find that out and report back and then we can get more specific.

Sounds more like a timing problem than an O2 Sensor. Distributor out of Sync would be my guess. It ran better at Higher idles because the timing belt/chain was tight from tension at low idle the timing was off which caused your problems. Now the belt is either broken or so loose the timing is out and the vehicle won't fire. If it has a Distributor cap remove it and watch the rotor. If it turns the belt is intact but Timing may still be off.

Hi,
I own a 96 Cherokee. Had a problem with it not starting randomly, havent ever really had any running issues like that last 40-50k every so often it will kinda bog down when you first are driving and you have to let of the gas but happens rarely and haven't pinpointed it yet. Anyways back to the starting. Have you checked the ground to the block? I replaced all my positive and negative wiring and that helped. Hop this helps at all. and good luck. Also check your vacuum lines, one running along the passenger side fender is definitely one place.
Take care,
Lee

At the back of the engine in between the trans. and engine is a crank sensor. It's on the pass. side of the block. Follow the crank sensor wiring that runs under the engine to see if the harness is broken. If it's in good shape then replace the crank sensor.
