Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Having problem with drivetrain.

My car seems to be accelerating just fine in neutral. Transmission seems to be shifting well. But when I take off, it hesitates and jerks. I have over 140,000 miles on it and I know one of the catyltatic converters is out. I also had some oil show up in my fourth cylinder for a period of time. I am hoping to be able to use my car for a bit long til I can find a replacement and rebuild this engine.

Thanks for the input zsmith. That was one of my thoughts as well. Problem is, I am not very handy with the newer cars. All the darned electronics, you know? Thanks again.

You describe a drivability issue which should turn on the Check Engine Light. Find an OBDII scanned and scan the ECU (Engine Control Unit) for any powertrain control trouble codes, then get back to me with those codes. We can take it from there.

My car was driving fine, and then all of a sudden, I went to accelerate after coming around a turn, and the car wouldn't shift into 2nd gear. It seems to drive fine in 1st, but it won't go into reverse...

Sounds like you're low on transmission fluid. Let the car warm up and then check the transmission fluid while it is in neutral at idle while it is parked on a level surface (make sure the emergency brake is on of course). If it is low use only dealer fluid. Hyundai takes a special automatic transmission fluid and if mixed with a universal fluid can ruin their transmissions.

Not sure what model you have, but if there is a vacuum line going to the tranny make sure it isn't leaking. That is the usual cause of late shifting. If the tranny has a vacuum modulator valve, consider replacing.

Transmission or Engagement issue?

I had the same problem with my 2006 Forenza - the problem was the transmission range sensor. If you look under the hood, on the drivers side, you'll see your trans. cable connected to a round part that also has an electrical cable coming from it. That is it. Part costs $36.07 at oemsuzukiparts.com (search for Neutral safety switch in the mechanical catalog).

If your engine is getting hot, check your radiator for transmission fluid; the radiator has a small heat exchanger that cools the transmission fluid it is located inside the radiator bottom; the transmission lines attach there; also, the leak into the radiator of transmission fluid can "starve" the transmission causing delay in shifting, slipping and, more throttle being needed to engage and, shift.
