1998 subaru impreza rx check eng lgt stays on speedo not working
Two months ago my check engine light started coming on and my speedo stopped working.
both problems were intermittent and not neccesarily at the same time.
i had just tried e-10 ethanol based fuel and when i went back to regular unleaded the problem disappeared.
it now however has returned and appears to be permanent.
On advice from this site i joined the two green plugs under the steering wheel and turned ignition to on position without starting car.
my check engine light didnt flash at all, it stayed on constantly and i could hear relays clicking and my thermo fans operating.
I havent serviced the car for twelve months and is due.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i probably cant afford to take it to subaru.

Could be the speedometer, or the speed sensor in the transmission. Is the check engine light staying on ? If it is, you should have the computer scanned for trouble codes. You may find a code for the sensor.
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON TO INDICATE THAT A FAULT HAS OCCURRED IN THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE OR EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM, WHEN THIS LIGHT COMES ON A FAULT CODE IS RECORDED IN THE MEEMORY OF THE COMPUTER, YOU NEED TO HAVE THE COMPUTER SCANNED TO FIND OUT WHAT THIS FAULT CODE IS DO PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, COMMON FAULTS ARE DEFECTIVE O2 SENSORS ON THIS MODEL.
If you have any of the large chain auto parts stores in your area, call them and ask if they do free scans; most do.
If Subaru has maintained the same procedures for a while, and you have checked fluids, etc., you can try resetting the light via the ignition switch:
-Turn on the ignition (don't start)
- switch it rapidly between the 'ignition on' and 'ignition off' positions three times.
If the error has cleared itself (not uncommon), the check light will reset. If the problem is still present, it will either stay or come back on.
Our Su has done this a couple of times and with the scanner we have on hand, there was never any particular repeated problem.
Just a computer glitch/hiccough -
I could not find a code for the neutral switch . The neutral safety switch only works when you start the vehicle, so it will not start in gear. I would take the car to another shop for a second opinion.
The speedo not working is usually caused by a failed 'speed sensor'. The check engine light is on telling u something is not functioning properly, and that is most likely the speed sensor. U should have any codes stored in the cars computer read (free service at most parts stores) to verify that there aren't other problems.
When your check engine light comes on, the car is telling you there's a problem, but it's still okay to drive to your destination. When the check engine starts blinking at you, that means pull over and turn off the car before you incur more damage. Please keep in mind that you shouldn't be driving it indefinitely without having your code checked (you can rent a code reader from most car parts stores) but that you probably won't kill anything if you drive it for a few more days.
i had this problem with mine if your cable spins wen the car is moving its not the gear box end or the cable its the speed sensor in the speedo its self its very easy to fix you have to strip the speedo out of the case the sensor is only small and on the under side of the speedo the sensor is about 50 mm long and 10 mm wide change that and it should be ok
oh remember to reset your ecu
