I started my car up (1994 mercury cougar) v6, up this evening. its about 10 above zero out, and it started like a brand new motor! I hit the throttle one time to get it to warm up! Then i let off the peddle and the motor made a clunk sound! When i went to start it back up,

Put them back where they belong, up stream and down stream. If that doesn't fix it, then you have other problems with the running of the engine which need to be addressed.

So what do you have for voltage at the battery?
Sounds like the alternator went bad. There should be around 14 volts at the battery with the engine running. Anything less and the alternator would be the first thing I suspected.
