It has a timing chain . if you have a double over head cam you have a timing belt.... either one can be done with engine in car... you remove passenger tire and the plastic cover inside wheel well ..then you can get to the bolts

Does a 1997 jetta have a timming belt or chain?

This year uses a timing belt and it should be replaced every 60,000 miles, this is very important to have the belt replaced at the recommended mileage, the engine is not free wheeling and if the belt breaks you can bend the engine valves

Please tell me what tools i need to change my timming chain on my 97 monte carlo

mostly standard metric sockets, but you will need a puller to get the crankshaft pulley off the crankshaft. The pulley bolt is also a large one--about 20mm

Timming belt replacement

there are 2 engines, which one? 2.5 or 2.3? i have never done one on a 2.5, so this is for a 2.3. jack up the car, pull the right front wheel. pull the splash shield. now, i like lots of room, so i drain the radiator, and pull off the upper hose. support the motor with a jack that you can move up and down, and pull the motor mount. on a 2.3, i can guarantee you the mount will be bad. now, this is important. you MUST loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley, and, most important of all, the nut on the power steering pulley. this must be done BEFORE you pull the drive belt, or you will never get the p/s pulley nut loose. this pulley has to come off to get the covers off. there's a lot more, but that will get you started. however, the millenia belt is kevlar, and they wear like iron. if the belt breaks, nothing will hit, but it will leave you stranded. i would just let it go till it breaks.
