Question about 1990 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

1900 wrangler will not start.

Engines turns over and has fire. I feel it is a fuel pump. I have looked for a fuse but cannot find one. on a 1995 it is beside battery but nothing on a 1990 ( Where is it located) Or is there something else wrong. I have located a connector next to fuel tank that has three wires. I used a test light and cannot find any power there.

I think it is fuel pump or power to it. It was running fine. turned it off and now it will not start, cannot hear fuel pump whine.

    getting good spark

if i prime it starts for a bit

    good compresson

where is fuel pump relay? I cannot find it!!!

thanks for the information. However I do not have a second fuse box under the engine compartment. ( the 1990 does not have a fuse box under the hood) It does have two relays beside the battery box., I have swaped them and it does not help.I buy ans sell jeeps and am familiar with the fuse box you are talking about on later models. I belive this is the first year for fuel injection. I have gone to the back of the jeep (under) beside the fuel tank and found a connector that has three wires going to the tank. i have used a test light (found good ground with one end of test light) and with iginition switch on tested all three wires and have not found any power.

Why are you so sure it's the fuel pump?

Are (ALL) the plugs getting spark?

Is there adaquate back pressure?

Is there good compression?

Have you confirmed a circuit to the fuel pump?

Is the pump getting voltage and ground?

Have you confirmed a working fuel pump relay?

The fuel pump relay is located in a second fuse box in the engine compartment. In that same box is a relay called the "ASD" relay. It means Auto Shut Down. That could also be the problem. As a test, try swapping the "ASD" with the A/C relay to see if the Jeep starts.

One of those two relays near the battery box should be the fuel pump relay. With the key on, engine off (and a second person to turn the key) you should feel the relay clink on. If it doesn't then try tapping on the relay. The relay could be stuck in the open position. Sometimes tapping on it free's it up. Also make sure that the contacts that the relay comes in contact with have voltage. If all fails, you'll have to troubleshoot the circuit from the fuel pump to the front of the jeep to find the open power wire.

Why won't it start?

All bets are off after a roll over, but you need to check to see if you can hear the fuel pump start and run when you first turn the key on. If you don't, there is a TIPM (looks like the underhood fuse box) This controls the fuel pump relay. Another thing is the fact that the collision detection system that triggers any air bag or seat belt tensioners will disable the fuel relay too.

Changed fuel pump, still no fuel.

Did you change the fuel filter? If not change it. Is the fuel pump actually running? Listen at the fuel filler with cap off while someone turns on the ignition without starting the engine. The pump should run for a few seconds. If not, check the fuse and fuel pump relay.

sounds like a ecm issue. Had the same problem with my 1995 wrangler and the time you had to let it sit before fuel pump kicked in got longer and longer until it wouldn't kick in at all. Ordered a rebuilt computer online and after i installed it i kicked right over.

1995 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L Fuel Pump/Check engine light

Could be one of several items...I'd check the fuel pump relay, auto shutdown relay and the ignition switch itself. I'd bet on it being one of those relays but, we all have been fooled at least once!!! I'd also make sure that body and engine grounding is good and clean. Relays can't work properly without a good ground.

JEEP WONT START

Sound like a connection (loos of the ground circuit) problem to the in tank fuel pump, I wouls suggest you check all the connections from the fire wall back for any loose or corroded connectors.
