99 4runner 3.4 po302 code

Today i changed back to original plug wires and switched coil pack 1 to 3....i cleared all codes drove to the store with scan tool hooked up...ran fine to store no codes... when i came out and started it, i noticed it was stumbling again, it tru only one code this time po302....i believe the wires i put in were bad or i mixed up cylinders..i think this because i have the original code i started with before changing wires....could it still be the coil pack as to it is showing a code for only one cylinder and the coil connects 2-5 cylinder? im at a lose at the moment and back at ground zero....any advice would be great...thanks

is there a way to test the fuel injectors on cylinders 2,4,6 without taking off the plenum? im really thinking # 2 injector is failing...i checked spark on the cylinder it was a very strong spark...changed coil packs again code did not follow...???

  • kosmindtrip Dec 29, 2008

i tested the battery, was like 12.67...im thinking its # 2 injector, but to my knowledge there is no way to test the injector without taking off the whole plenum...is this right???

i would do a compression test but dont have the funds to buy one just time...

  • kosmindtrip Dec 30, 2008

checked cylinders for compression...2,4,6 very low...65-75 psi...noticed oil leak at # 2 cylinder..possible blown head gasket causing # 2 misfire?

  • kosmindtrip Jan 01, 2009

today i checked the injectors with a stethoscope...all injectors clicked lowdly exept # 2 all i could hear was the engine..is this a good indicator that the injector was bad..
just some more info-before testing i cleared code drove around until car was heated and code came back...then tested soon after?????

Whatever the problem is with this type of code (or similar codes like p0303, p0301, p0304, p0305, p0306, etc.), it is something that is isolated to that one cylinder, keep this in mind as you are working on diagnosing it. Remember that a cylinder needs fuel, spark at the right time and compression in order to fire.

There are two things that should be checked next and think you will
find the problem, first check the engine compression, if the
compression on #2 is within 10 psi or so of the other cylinders then
concentrate on the injector, injector failures are not uncommon on
these engines,it may be possible to listen to the injector with a
stethoscope with a thin probe, it should make a clicking noise. If
necessary remove the plenum chamber and connect as small test light to
the injector, they are available at the autoparts store, the light
should flash when cranking the engine, if it does then the computer is
sending the on/off signal and the injector is the problem, if it
doesn't then it's either the wiring or the ECM which would be unusual
bot possible, good luck and let me know what happens.

A diagnostics would be a great idea, shucks does it for free and they will tell you what codes come up and they will tell you how to do what you need in order to get it working the correct way.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, to determine if the injector is spraying fuel inside the combustion chamber, deliberately remove the sparkplug wire leading to the plug of the cylinder in question. Start/run the engine. Ignition off, remove that sparkplug. If it is wet with fuel, chances are, injector is working. Do the same for the other cylinders.

Electrically, the injectors would have two wires; one is a constant IGN +12 while the other would be pulsating when engine is cranked or running.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

I think it might be Bad Battery/Wiring or just a blown fuse or electrical fault!
Take it to a repair shop and have it looked at and then tell us the problem on the Internet!!!

Is this your thread?? Same username!?
http://www.yotatech.com/f2/po302-code-99-4runner-3-4-a-160475/
seems like you already solved this problem?
Or has it re-occurred??

I was personally able to solve a P302, misfire in 2nd cylinder, code by replacing the spark plugs and wires. Worked fine after that. It's generally a very simple ignition problem. I found on line that the p300 coad is a random missfire in all cylinders and that the last number in a p300 code is the cylinder that is misfiring. Your p302 would be #2 cylinder. injectors are often the cause of misfire codes on this year and model. The first thing to try would be new spark plugs plugs and plug wires. This fixes misfires the majority of the time. If that doesn't help check the rotor and fuel injectors. Either a bad coil or bad fuel injectors. try switching coils with other cylinder and see if code changes. if yes, you got a bad coil, if not, you must change all 4 injectors, cause they will all go bad eventually. I've seen it. I was a Toyota technician

There are two things I can think of that may cause this problem, first make sure that the ground connections on the left side of the intake chamber near the DLC connector are tight.
Recheck the plug wire installation, the three coils on the right bank also fire the plugs on #2,4,6 on the left bank, the #1 coil fires#4, #2/5 and #3/6.

Yes. No clicking indicates a bad injector; you mentioned you had a Noid light; does it pulse?

If you remove the plenum to replace the injector, buy new plenum gaskets. You should not reuse them.

The graciousness of a FixYa rating for my assistance would be appreciated.

Ok this is sort of where I started with same problem, which at moment is not solved. You are on the right track as I also just changed my wires, although the readings from wires were ok, We also tried the coil & igniter which is simple to put in as connected by plug ins, I will warn you as I went to a Toyota parts yard $50. and they made the mistake of cutting one of the wires, to which my mechanic had to weld it together. It is held on by two bolts and plug ins so there is no need to cut! I was not getting power to cylinder 2. Thats when I can tell you that my back yard mechanic put in the injector, just to give you an indication in Vancouver, Canada it was $75. then 1hr to put in. It is a little tricky to install, and watch out for the vacuum hose for the fuel regulater as my mechanic didn't tighten it and it came loose! I have gone through a succession of things, latest being A new Coolant Temp Sensor which sends signals to fuel compression etc. It's tempermental in missing and running ruff. I am on here to try and get solutions before I take it to Toyota....arg

How to change coils on 2003 expedition

please tell me in this tune up you had new spark plugs put in? if check engine light is on there are some stored codes those will give you the suspect cylinder(s) check to see if you have plug wires if not there will be a coil for each cyl. pass. side of motor starting in the front working to the back or firewall cyls are 1,2,3,4 driver side same front to back 5,6,7,8 codes will be PO301 cyl 1. PO302 cyl 2. etc. get the code find the correct cyl. unplug little connector u will need a 7mm socket to remove the bolt holding the coil in place then pull up on the coil and boot.... if u have plug wires get the code find correct cyl and follow plug wire to coil pack in front of engine there will be two one on each side in front of engine...

P0302 is a misfire detected in cylinder #2. this can be caused by a bad spark plug, plug wire/Coil pack, or faulty injector. I would go back and switch the #2 injector with one on the other side and then clear the code. See it it comes back on the cylinder that you put the #2 injector in. If so then the injector is faulty..If not then the spark plug or wire/coil pack to it is probably bad. Rare case it could be a sticky valve.

Hello i have a GTI its a 2.0L manual transmission, i have been having problem after problem thus far. Current engine codes PO422, PO300,PO304,PO303,PO302. I do not have a code list to see what these are...

I think that PO422 is the Cat Converter, it may be bad or may be just the O2 sensor.
The PO300, 302, 303, 304 code have to do with the ignition coils or wires. (302, 303, 304 means there are ignition /firing problems in cylinders 2, 3and 4). If your lucky just the wire and new spark plugs.
Google "engine codes Jetta" for more on web. Good luck.

First thing you can do to eliminate a possible cause is trade the coil packs between 1&4, and 2&3. Check again and if 1&4 are now dead, then you replace the bad coil pack.

You stated that the plugs were wet, but didn't say from what. What did the plugs smell like? Oil, fuel, or coolant?

Please let me know what was on those plugs, as there could be other causes as well.
