Re: starting grand am
Sounds like a bad connection problem at the items you're moving around to finally get the car started. Read what you actually wrote. You'll see that you answered your own question. Start by confirming the connections at the items you're moving around.

you wont like this at first but it does have some good news.
the parts can only be found at the dealer as the whole column.
but you dont have to remove the whole column
well actually its just the inside half
but you dont have to change steering wheel
just remove the new parts from one to the other,.
the broken parts are wheel lock .
its in the middle of the key tumblers and the switch.
its not hard to do but u need time and the right star tamper resistance tool.they come in a set of like a set of eight.there very small so keep em in your pocket.
you should be good at this point.
if you need more help please just let me know.
thank you for using fixya.
Either the starter is getting old and drawing too much amperage or somehow timing is advanced too much (hard to do unless distributor is a tooth off (advanced), as timing is not adjustable). I assume that the engine temp is OK (running should be about 210) if not that can cause similar problems.
Check to see if you have a computer chip on your key. Chances are that the computer chip or the reader in the ignition keyhole is not reading it properly. If you leave the key on, engine off, for 15-20min. that security will reset and the light will go off. Turn key off and now try to start engine.
First of all if the car will start without the clutch depressed then you have a bad clutch safety switch which may lead to light malfunction, but highly unlikely. You may also have a bad reverse/neutral safety switch which is generally on the side of the transmission. GOOD LUCK!!!
