Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L won't start

Yesterday, I went out to go to work and Jeep wouldn't start. Cranked once and when I turned the key again, nothing. Figured it may be the battery since I had never replaced the battery when I bought it used in March. It currently has 56K miles on it. My neighbors came out and helped me try to jump the battery. No go, but it DID crank this time. Figured the battery was just really dead and had my neighbor drive me to auto parts store to get a new battery. Put it in and it still won't start. Husband came home and checked the relays - all fine, and then disconnected the line from the external fuel filter to see if fuel was being pumped through it. Cranked the engine again and no fuel was being pumped through it. We also were not able to hear the fuel pump turn on with the key in the on position. Purchased a new fuel pump from a dealer, installed it today and it still won't start.

We didn't replace the external filter. Could this be the problem?

Is there an emergency fuel cut-off switch to the fuel pump on this vehicle?

Or is it possible that this is not fuel related at all and an ignition problem? Or maybe the Sentry key? Would my check engine light come on if this were the case? My check engine light is not on.

Car ran beautifully until yesterday. We had even driven it 120 miles each way to my parents house in Pennsylvania on Christmas Day with no problems.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

We put an OBDII computer on it and no codes came up at all.

Actually we didn't check power to the pump - all of my husband's tools, including the voltmeter are at his job, locked up until Monday. We'll borrow one tomorrow and check it out. I'll post the results. Thanks for responding so fast.

Crank position sensors are a big problem in these vehicles. Scan the Jeeps computer and post any codes you come up with.

Sorry to tell you this guy but it still could be a crank sensor like I first said. Seen it countless times before.

Yes you should have changed the external filter.

Have you confirmed power and ground to the fuel pump?

Turn the key to "On" but don't start the jeep. Let the key sit in the "On" position for a minute or two. Let the fuel pressure build then if the Jeep starts it means that you could have a defective or wrong pump. Yes wrong. On a jeep YOU MUST USE AN OEM PUMP. The after market impellers on after market pumps don't work.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo windows won't go down lights come on and stay on. Then the lights won't come on.

I had the same problem with mine. I have the same year Jeep. The Remote door lock also wouldn't work (Not on drivers door anyway!). Here's what I had found out from a co-worker with same vehicle. The wires in the door that run to the control panel on door for windows has been broken. You probably have several broken wires inside the "Rubber boot" you see when opening the door. You will have to take off the interior door panel, be careful to remove any wires and rod connectors when doing so. Then open the rubber seal. Find where the wires come in to door. Remove boot. Locate broken wires inside the boot section. You will then need to sodder in a 1'-2' wire to extend the broken wire(s). You may also decide to extend the unbroken wires now, just so you might not have to go through all of this again, later. I hope this helps out. I had found out it is a very common Jeep Grand Cherokee problem.
