Question about 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

Montero sport stalls at stops after battery change.

I recently changed my battery (October). The engine stalled at stops every time. We increased the idle. It was fine. Took it in for inspection a(December) and the computer says "waiting for response". The guy told us we needed to reset the computer ($100). We took the negative cable off over night and restarted the truck in the am. It was fine. We took the idel back to where it was supposed to be and drove it to work. It stalled at each and every stop. HELP!!!!! Any help is much appreciated!

Remove the cable again. Then when you start it allow it to idle for 20 mins in park.

I ran into same problem recently with my Mitsubishi. After battery replacement, there were no starting problems but after driving 2 kms, it begins to shut down the engine whenever I press the clutch and brake to stop the car.
I google the problem and understood that car computer needs to be reset. So to reset car computer, one needs to disconnet the battery. I remove the negative cable from battery for 15 mnts. After placing back the cable, i go on drive for 15 kms. and the problem is solved now.

Your idle adaptive memory was erased when your battery died and you need to clean the throttle body. Solution is here:

Why is my Montero stalling out when I slow down to make a turn or when I stop?

Your idle air bypass motor is bad or fouled with carbon deposits. Remove it and clean it with throttle body cleaner . If that don't work replace it

I need an detailed image of a ignition system for a mitsubishi montero sport 2000 3.0 6 cylinders

details are only 2 places, the FSM, Factory serv. man.
and alldata.com
you can look any time. sure can.

enigine stalls, did you give at tuneup first the 60k mile column?
if not, why not now?>

STALLS 101 (can be very complex. 50+ causes , but a few tests)
  1. can you save the stall with a fast right foot, (all time top check and 100% free to do...??????)
  2. Did the lights go dead at the stall , radio , head lamps dim, yes, do test this stalls issues, with head lamps on and dash fan. It the still work at the stall , that means you have 12vdc power, the loss of which kills dead any EFI cars engine.
  3. The car 2000, year, and as such as dirt cheap scan tool fits the port (16pin) near knees. you get a tool easy, everyone here in USA can do this easy, and not doing so, misses the BOAT. you can see why it failed at that moment. EG: lost CMP/CKP sensors, see DTC error, like P0300s.gross misfire, etc. gee LOOK and do not work blind, why miss these key facts?
  4. Lost compression hot.? 1 or all 6 cyl.
  5. lost spark 1 or all 6? tests. DTC errors. manual checks tuneup time.
  6. Lost fueling and flooding, Spark tips show flooding easy, LOOK.

keep in mind, i dont have #1 info above, and is key to ALL this.
Hints:
the EFI works over time to prevent stalls, so the problem is serious
the stalls can be , lack of air, ISC stuck closed (fast foot tells you)
or the ECU sees and error and decides to cut fuel.
the ECU does that on all cars, for 2 thinks, it THINKS spark is bad or
the TPS is stuck at 4v. or more.
Stall scan be engine runs so bad, the ISC can not raise the idle more. and stalls, (EGR stuck open)
a scan tool can be had for 9 bucks. (fleabay)

2001 Montero Sport up stream oxygen sensor has failed. My check engine light came on and tried to drive vehicle at night and my lights went dim and the truck quit.

This has nothing to do with you O2 sensor. You have more than one problem. An O2 sensor will not cause what you just described. It will cause a check engine light but not the dimming of lights and a stalling issue. Check your charging sytem ( battery and alternator )

Yesterday tthe car stalled and it scared me what could cause a sport utility Montero Mitsibitshi to stall

The fuel filter is most likely the problem. If/when the fuel runs low it start sucking sediment out of the gas tank. That sediment gets piled up into your filter so much that the fuel can no longer flow at a constant rate fast enough to fuel the engine. This can happen instantly with no warning. Thanks for asking!

Mitsu Montero Sport '02 engine stalls but not when air cond is on.

hi there. the reason that the engine idles good when the air-con is engaged is that ussually all vehicles nowadays have a vacumm advance mechanism. this is triggered mainly by a electric solenoid valve which is also attached parallel to the source supplying power to compressor. a small vacumm hose with a diameter like a common pencil or ballpen case. its made of rubber and it runs from the alternator vacumm pump then to the solenoid valve and to the vacumm advancer unit attached to the injection pump throttle. this system raises the idle a tad higher.

if your montero runs completely normal and you experience no other problems with your engine except for your present problem, then the solution is just raising the idle a little higher. if your montero is equiped with a RPM guage on the dash, try adjusting the idle to around 800 rpms. it would be healthier for your car if the idle raises a bit when you engage the air-con because this would compensate for the added load on your engine.

hope this helps.

Battery chaged and car DOES NOT idle

when u disconnected the battery u lost the adaptive idle learn program, do the following to clean the intake and allow normal idle

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
