Question about 1995 Honda Accord

Access to heater hose

Thanks for you help earlier today. My guess of hose size (2-1/2 to 3 inches) was off (it's more like 1 inch) but I did find where it runs into the firewall, so I feel sure it's a heater hose. My problem is still access to the end attached to the block. I can remove the ducts for the airfilter but the distributor is still in the way. And getting the clamp off the end near the firewall won't be too tough but getting a new one on with the screw type clamp may be impossible without removing some other parts.

You don't need a clamp with a screw attached, the newer clamps are metal with self spring loading. I dont' know if I'm say it correctly, but you would just squeese the clamp with a pair of pliars and when you release them it applies a constant pressure around the hose.

Where are the heater hoses under the hood?

I don't have one like yours sitting in front of my house, but here goes.
On most cars, the hoses to the air cleaner are the largest, about 3 inches to 6 inches in diameter.
Next smaller are the radiator hoses, usually there are two, one at the top of the radiator and one at the bottom,
These hoses are usually about 2 inches to 3 inches in diameter. Next smaller are the heater hoses.
There are usually 2.
These are normally from 1 inch to 1& 1/2 inch in diameter, and traditionally are from the engine to the firewall, which is the metal wall in front to the car's interior.
In today's modern cars, it is not unusual that you would have a really hard time finding and seeing the heater hoses, because of their location.
Next smaller are vacuum lines or water hoses for the engine, from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch diameter.
Most all hoses are black.
If someone can show you all of the parts under the hood and what they do, you can tell the heater hoses by where they go, to and from.

Leaking antifreeze inside car. i want to bypass heater core if could until we can get it fixed. how do i do it?

Trace the 2 water hoses going into the firewall from the engine. Remove 1 and measure the inside diameter, most but not all GM heater hose is 1/2 inch. Go to the hardware store and get a plastic 90 degree plumbing elbow the same size and a couple screw hose clamps. Remove the heater hose from the firewall and connect them to the elbow with the hose clamps. Make sure they can't rub on the exhaust manifold and top up the rad and you are good. Hope this helps.

Change thermostat in 2000 Mazda MPV.


The location of the thermostat for most vehicle.
Stand in front of the car with the hood open, you'll see a black hose hooked to the upper side of the
radiator.( about 2 inch in diameter, newer vehicles about 1 and 1/2 inch, and newer small cars
about 1 and 1/4 inch. ) Follow the hose to the other end, it connects to the thermostat housing. The thermostat is inside of the housing.( the hose usually goes to the air intake manifold, but some
housings are on the side or back of the engine. )

To replace the thermostat in most vehicles yourself;

Remove the hose from the housing, then remove bolts from the housing and lift the housing off
to access the thermostat. Pay attention to witch side is up on the thermostat that you remove, the
new one will have to go in the same way. Also look at the temperature rating that is stamped into
the thermostat that you take out, and make sure the new one has the same temperature rating.
(failure to do so can cause false readings by some sensors, and may start triggering error codes)
Install new thermostat, right side up, put housing back on and bolt back down, hook hose back on
to the housing. Check the coolant level. Start the engine and let it run for 6 to 8 minutes to reach,
"normal operating temperature", and look for any leaking. before you turn the engine off turn your
heater wide open and listen for a click. Most of the time when a thermostat opens you can hear a
click and may hear the coolant flowing through the system. Shut the engine off, wait for it to cool
down and then check your coolant level one more time. ( do not fill all the way up, only fill to
FULL line on resrvior.)

The hoses are moved by turning them a few degree's, then pulling them off. See diagram below.

Brake booster hose the size is 15/32

Use 1/2 inch hose and use a hose clamp at the ends. 1/32 of an inch is not much of a difference

Just had radiator replaced, leak has developed around housing/gasket of hose running to passenger side just to side of engine and slightly behind. My mechanic doesn't know what the part is we are looking...

is it actually on the engine? I ask because you say it is to the passenger side and just behind the engine, that makes me think it is a heater hose, the heater hoses go from the water pump to the heater core which is located on the passenger side, the difference between heater hoses and radiator hoses is the size and of course location, heater hoses are generally about 1/2 inch to 1 inch, with radiator hoses being between 1 3/4 and 3 inches

The leak is coming from under the passenger side door and the pipes caring the coolant to the rear heater is rusted. Can this be replaced easily or closed off so that there is only heat in the front?

On my 1994 Grand Caravan:
I cut (sawed) the rusted pipes at the point of where the rust stopped (plus 1-inch. Take that cut portion of the pipe to any auto parts store and get BULK Rubber Heater Hose. Remember to add on a few inches (2) for each end to fit onto the pipe (on the Van) at each end. Use the pipe you brought to get the correct size (diameter), fitting the pipe snuggly into the rubber hose. Buy 2-adjustable band clamps for the hose, one for each end. Make sure you get the correct size diameter clamps.
Hint: When putting the rubber hose you bought onto the metal pipes on the Van : to slide the hose onto the pipe easier use grease on the outside of the metal pipe and on the inside of the rubber hose you bought (about 2-inches).
Clamp them down at least 1-inch from the end of the cut.
Replacing the metal pipes is more expensive and more labor. I did mine for about $5.00 and was done in 15-minutes, The Rubber Hoses will not rust on you.

  1. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  2. Open the instrument panel glove compartment. Push in on the sides of the compartment to release it, allowing access to the heater core.
The heater core can be damaged if too much force is applied to the heater core pipes during hose removal.
  1. Remove the heater module screws and remove the heater module assembly cover. For vehicles equipped with A/C, remove the air conditioning evaporator temperature sensor assembly from the heater and A/C cover.
  2. Remove the heater core screw and clamp.
  3. Remove the hose pipe clamp screw and the hose pipe clamp. Clamp off the heater hoses.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the pipes.
  2. Remove the heater core by carefully pulling it towards you.

  1. Install the heater core and attach the heater hose assembly to the heater hose pipes. Note the following:
    1. Lubricate the heater core pipes with petroleum jelly for ease of installation and to assure a good seal.
    2. Be sure the seals around the heater pipes remain in place when installing.
    3. To verify that the seal is installed correctly, observe the seal from inside the engine compartment. If the seal has leaks, apply a sealer between the heater core pipes and the evaporator housing.
  2. Install the hose pipe clamp and the bolt/screw. Unclamp the heater hoses. Tighten the hose pipe clamp bolt/screw to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  3. Install the heater core clamp and screw. Tighten the screw to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  4. Install the heater module assembly cover and secure with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Refill the cooling system. Operate the engine and check for leaks, add coolant if necessary.
  7. Install the instrument panel glove compartment.

Hole in heater hose

If the hose is 2 to 3 inches in diameter then it's one of two primary hoses from the radiator. There should be two that come off the radiator and go onto the engine block. The top one has the thermostat mounted on the engine and leads into the hose. I'm guessing you can't see where the hose goes because it is the return hose from the bottom of the radiator. See if you can get underneath the car to see where it's going. Most likely it's just a simple clamp and you can replace the hose yourself. No special toos are required, just time and a lot of fluid dripping when you take the hose off :-)
