    I dont see how the timing would be a factor if it ran fine when it was parked

    I guess I should have mentioned that it turns over just fine and it wants to star but wont keep going

    I have spark at the plugs and coil. The fuel pressure was 48 p.s.i.

    I just put new plugs and plug wires in it a month ago and I just double checked the gap on two and they are the right gap at .040

    I did not however put a cap and rotor in it

    Today I put a new cap and rotor and spark plugs. The old plugs were very wet with gas. I checked the injectors for spark and they too are all okay. I have not checked the map or tps What I can not understand is it was running fine when it was parked with no check engine light and it still does not have the light on.

Change your pcv valve, check o2 sensor and check timing chain - may be stretched or worn out

Hi
have the crankshaft positioning sensor checked it may be bad.Just because the crank sensor sets a code that does not mean the sensor is defective, it means there is a problem in the crank sensor circuit, that can be the sensor, the sensor connector, the sensor wiring or in some rare cases the PCM (computer)

What size engine do you have? If you have spark starting fluid should have started it for at least a few seconds. Are you sure you have a spark at the plugs? What was the fuel pressure PSI?

    OK chek your MAS or MAP sensor. also check your throttle position switch. Both should work off a 5 volt ref signal. Check TPS with a DVOM Digital volt ohm meter, Sweep it and make sure voltage drops. Sometimes they go bad and act like the engine is flooded and won't let the injectors fire.

    I meant to sat MAF Mass air flow sensor or MAP sensor. I doubt the crank position sensor is bad because you are getting a spark. If you need further help just let me know.
    Also if you have a "noid" light you should check for a pulse at the injectors. They are cheap and can be purchased at a parts house.

    If you have spark at the plugs then it is not the cap or rotor. Did you check the MAF and TPS yet. Did you check for pulse at injectors?

Check out the ignition switc and also ignition module.
Check all of the battery terminals and cables and check the wires on the starter/selonoid, start from the battery and follow the cable out and check all conections , clean and tighten them and if it still does it the starter/selonoid is bad and needs replacement...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, what is required for an engine to fire/run are:

  • air/fuel mix;
  • spark;
  • both at the right time.
You have checked:
  • presence of spark at the end of the sparkplug;
  • fuel is being sprayed by the injector as well as use of starter fluid;
  • could it be the timing then?
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    As you posted both spark and injected fuel present, there is no other possibility. But of course the timing on most engines are affected/controlled by:

    • timing chain/belt (include tensioner);

    • cam position sensor;

    • crank position sensor.

    Sorry but have to clear up, you initial post "now it wont start" refers to engine would crank but would not fire/run?

    One of your posts "turns over just fine and it wants to star but wont keep going", have you tried adjusting the distributor?

I own a 98 oldsmobile intrigue and i ran out of gas the other day.I refueled and it started up fine.The next day it died while i was driving but able 2 start after 30mins. Now wont start. Help!!

How long since a tune-up? Can you check for applicable trouble codes?
Generally if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Make sure the battery has a full charge. Check your security system, where applicable. Only crank the starter for a few seconds at a time, let it cool off, a little.

1996 dodge 2500 v10 8.0 no spark and no fuel pump. Ran fine 3 days ago

Check the fuel pump fuse and relay, if it's OK, you have a bad fuel pump. About the no spark, could be many things
Ignition coil, distributor (if so equipment) , main shaft position sensor, computer problem
Good Luck

98 so its a older vehicle ?? Well i know nothing about layout of this american vehicle but for its age check the fuel rail as on the end is a vacumn controlled valve so make sure its connected and the vacumn pipe isnt cracked or perished ,Anything else i have no idea sorry dont see these motors here in spain very often unless its on a imported camper van but these are normally all diesel ,have seen a 7.2 litre ford E350 petrol though but running on a gas conversion

98 Ford F150 w/4.6l Wont start. Hear fuel pump click. Have pressure on fuel rail. Pulled #1 plug from head and plugged back into wire. Grounded plug and cranked. No spark. Changed wires 4 and 7 four days...

have diagnostic codes checked to see if you have a cam or crank sensor fault. make sure fuel pressure is at the required pressure, just testing to see if you have fuel at the valve is not enough. replace all spark plug wires. if you replaced two then all are just as old and even when they "look good" does not qualify as "they are good". Replace coil pack. start up drive away happy

first you must determine if it has fire, and fuel pressure if so then injector pulse. Any OBD codes???? you really need a scanner to go any further without guessing.

well you can check the injector pulse with a noid light and if no blink then you can assume that the injectors are good then you can either go after the pick up coil and make sure you have spark through the wires but if you have a blinking light then you lack something else you need three things compression fuel and spark and it will run hope this helps oh most important check all the fuses and relays
