2000 catera cold weather start problems

My 2000 catera seems to all of a sudden have a start problem. I has gotten very cold out and now it will turn over but won't start. It will turn over and over until the battery dies but won't start.

Is fuel and spark reaching the plugs? I am assuming so as the other day it did this after it had run for a while then was shut off about 20 minutes. Wouldn't start for about ten minutes then finally turned over and started. Just was odd. Then another day did the same thing. Today no go!

This problem started when the temp got below the 20's.

I called some parts stores and got a number of answers.

    One said the fuel pump.

one said the battery was bad.

Another told me it needed a tune up.

When the car is warm it doesn't do it. I guess something could be freezing in the fuel system?

Thanks for the tip and I will try that.

Tried the carb cleaner in the intake. Still won't start.

Turns over has plenty of battery power for cold start. The cables are a bit frayed but other than that gets power but just won't start up????

Really don't know what to try next.

took the spark plug out sprayed carb cleaner in the cylinder, put plug back and still won't start?

There is a lot of oil surrounding the area from a gasket that leaked could that have done something?

Is fuel and spark reaching the plugs? Spray some carburetor cleaner into the intake. DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID. If the car starts or makes an attempt to start you know that the problem is a fuel delivery issue.

Do a "Fuel Leak Down" test. It could be a fuel pressure regulator issue or a leaking fuel injector.

Since spraying carburetor cleaner in the intake made no difference then there's a good chance that the problem is a spark delivery issue and not a fuel delivery issue. You still have to be absolutely sure that fuel is or isn't reaching the plugs. But at this point the first thing you should consider is a spark delivery issue. Is spark reaching or not reaching the plugs? You must be sure. For vehicle to start:

Spark to the plugs must be present.

Fuel to the plugs must be present.

    Back pressure must be present.

    Compression must be present.

All the above are basic to any and all vehicles.

2000 explorer with 5.0L AWD won't start. engine turns over just won't fire. seems related to cold weather.

Grab you a can of ether, spray some quick shots. You may just have a faulty choke. If that doesn't start it up, I'd look towards the fuel pump as being faulty.

My Durango has been running with no problems. When I went to start it this morning it was just turning over and not starting. I finally got it to start and it was screeching really bad. When I opened...

That should have an auto tensioner, it could have suddenly gone bad. If you are in an area where the weather has just gotten cold make sure the antifreeze in your radiator is the proper mixture. If the mixture is not right and the waterpump was starting to freeze it would explain the loud squeeling and why the tensioner broke or came loose.

The 2000 mountianeer starts and runs fine but shuts off

CHECK THE COLD START ENRICHMENT VALVE AND OR THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE. I AM ASSUMING THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS FUEL INJECTED. ONE OF THOSE HAVE GONE BAD.

1998 Catera will not start if it sits overnight in cold weather

It can be worn distributor cap/rotor or coolant temperature sensor.
To check it leave car outside, try to activate if it is not use the hair fan and worm up the distributor cap area
http://www.autozone.com/Ntt,distributor%20cap/shopping/allResults.htm
If it helps replace the distributor cap/wiring/spark plugs. If it doesnot help warm up the coolant temperature sensor:
http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c15280090338
and, if no help, spurk plug area.
Also good idea in cold weather use higher octane fuel or regular with octane booster or injectror cleaner added and ask the mechenic to put winter oil (less viscous) for winter time during oil change.
Good Luck

Cold weater start problem. Oil smoke in from the heater vent.

The same problem happened to me and it turned out to be my heater core.

Normally smoke will come from the heater core when it needs to be replaced.

Also the smell is most likely anti-freeze and and you normally smell it when your
engine is running warm or hot.

Check your coolant levels to be sure. and the hoses leading to your Heater Core

heater cores for that vehicle normally run $180 - $230 and you need to remove your
entire Instrument Panel (IP) (Dashboard) to replace it.

I hope this helps!

Truck wont start

1.) spray engine starting fluid into air intake ---remove air filter if necessary.
2.) if ignition only on this spray, then seek bad fuel supply problem.
3.) if no ignition, check for spark.
