Thanks Mike.  Got the old one off no problem, but I can't get the new one to compress.  It's direct GM replacement.  I guess it's going back.

By hand.  It's fully extended and its about 2 inches too long.  I need to compress it to attach it.  It's not just hard to move.  It won't compress at all.  I looked for some type of release or lock, but didn't see anything.

Hi Mike.  I finally figured it out.  I took the good one off the right hand side which allowed me to elevate the liftgate even further to the point where I could attach the new one.  I put the new one on the left and the old (good) one on the right and now it's working perfectly.  Thanks for the tips.

The ends snap over a ball. There should be clips that pull straight out the pull the struts off. The new ones just snap on

Are you trying to compress the new one by hand or with the lift gate because it is nearly impossible to compress a new one by hand.

Replace struts

To remove the struts on a Mystique, Loosen the lug nuts on both front tires. With a hydraulic jack, raise the vehicle on one side, then place a jack stand under the vehicle and adjust it to the proper height for the vehicle to rest on. Repeat this step for the opposite side.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 2007 Suburban, and the lift gate opens up about 1/4 the way and then drops to the closed position. This happens regardless of how it's opened.

{: ) Your liftgate struts (shocks) could have gone weak. If it's a power liftgate, press the off button to disable the power liftgate function, so that you can open the liftgate manually. With a little help from you, extend the liftgate at full open position and check if it will hold itself up there as it normally should. If it starts to fall off as you catch it, that means the liftgate struts don't have enough pressure anymore to push and sustain the weight of the liftgate. Check for signs of leak on the struts, or better if you can replace it both.

The liftgate will not stay open

{: ) The liftgate struts may have become weak. Check for signs of oil leakage on the struts. Better yet, replace the two liftgate struts.

How to replace liftgate support rod fro 2005 jeep grande cherokee

Hi ... You need two people, two new gas struts a small screw driver and a thirteen mill open end spanner.....
Change one at a time with the second person supporting the tailgate, dependant on what type is fitted the struts will have a metal "c" clip that needs to be removed at both ends on the ball joint sockets, prise the clips out and remove the strut, and replace in reverse order.... if you have the struts with the ball and sockets at each end you need to support the tailgate with your by now long suffering partnre and undo the nut and socket in the body and tailgate.... they, once loosened will come out easily..... just make sure that when refitting you dont cross threads... repeat same on the other side and then give friend a cold beer..... hope this helps..... How do I install new liftgate strus on my 2001 chevy suburban?

They usually just pop off the ball on the body and on the liftgate. It takes a bit of force. Be careful, even when they are not working well they provide some force, and the lift gate gets really heavy when they are removed.

Also, because of that, make sure the gate is fully open before you remove a strut. It will expand to full length the instant it gets the chance.

2005 Suburban Liftgate will not open

HAVE A FRIEND PUSH ON THE GLASS WHEN YOU TRY TO OPEN IT THE NEXT TIME. THE LATCH INSIDE IS LOOSE AND NEEDS TO BE TIGHTENED. BY PUSHING ON THE HANDLE IN THE GLASS DOOR YOU CAN RELIEVE THE PRESSURE FROM THE LOCK AND OPEN IT THEN LOOK ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HANDLE IN THE GLASS THERE IS A SMALL METAL PEG WITH A NUT AT THE BOTTOM I THINK IT 7/16 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. TIGHTEN IT UP AND YOURE ON YOUR WAY
