Will not start

My 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan will not start. When I turn the key, there was only a rapid clicking noise. We replaced the starter and now there is not even a clicking noise. The gages do not fluctuate or anything. Any ideas?

My husband just left to take the battery out and run it to AutoZone. He originally dismissed the battery since the lights and radio both came on and the car dings when the door is open and everything. I will let you know what he finds out! Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks! My husband took the battery to AutoZone which they found was only putting out 10 volts...about enough to run the radio and lights. They tried charging it, but it wouldn't hold the charge. We bought a new battery and the car is finally running! They did let us know they tested the starter and that failed, so we would have needed both anyway. Thanks again for all your help!

Make sure the battery connections are clean and free of corrosion. You should have the battery "Load Tested". Stores like Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, and Pep Boys will do a "Load Test" for free. If the battery fails the "Load Test" change it. Also confirm an operational charging system (alternator and voltage regulator).

The clicking noise is usually the sign of a dead battery. No gauges or noise could mean a REALLY dead battery. Check battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight. Have u tried to jump start it? U can take the battery to a parts store where most will check it's condition for free. So check this 1st and let me know what u find. If that's not it, we can continue.

I have a 2004 Dodge Grand caravan that won't start. (60,000 miles) I hear a clicking noise and my gauges go "crazy" when I turn the key. (Speedometer goes from 0-120 and back to zero when I turn...

Sounds like a classic case of a dead battery. It takes much less energy to sweep the gauges and turn on the lights than it does to crank the engine over. The clicking noise is usually your starter solenoid trying to engage and spin the starter. Try a new battery. Happy motoring.

Good luck.

2004 Dodge Caravan won't start...just a clicking noise...

Check the battery first. Just because the lights are on doesn't mean it has enough power to start the van. If you or the van has a volt meter, the battery should read at least 13-14 volts to be good. If the battery is good then the alternator is good and we move on to the starter solenoid. I'm sure it's one of these. Do the lights go off or very dim when you turn the key? If so then battery.

2001 grand caravan starting problem

You must be sure that the connections at the starter are sound. If they are o/k then check the current draw at the starter when the problem occurs. This can be done with a voltmeter attached to the battery and watch the voltage when someone is tryihg to start engine. If voltage drops to 10 volts or less that means the starter wants to turn. If voltage does not drop then it means the starter has a bad internal connection. Probably bad brushes. If this is what is wrong then starter replacement should occur

2004 dodge grand caravan - clicking when turn key to start

You might want to take the battery out and have it checked. Parts stores will check it for free, so that would be 1st step. Make sure connections are clean and tight. If it's the original battery, it's 4 years going on 5 old, which is the life span expected, and the clicking noise can be classic bad battery symptom. If battery checks out ok, it may be the starter, so 1st make sure the battery is good. countrycurt0
