My car won't start

I have 03 chevy malibu that died as i came to a stop. lucky the stop was i front of my house. The car turns over and sometimes it well start for just a second before it dies again. I'm thinking fuel filter or fuel pump. How can test it to narrow things down. I can do minor repairs but far from calling myself a mech. thanks for your help.

Turn the key on and listen for the 2 second prime of the fuel pump. It's that same humming sound you've heard every time you turned the key up until now. Get a friend to turn it and listen from the trunk or under the tank. If no hum, the pump is bad. Same thing happened with my 03 Malibu with 57k miles. Mileage isn't the issue though, it was the faulty gas gauge that led me to run it bone dry out of gas. This causes the fuel pump to overheat and die when you repeatedly try to restart it. I had to disconnect, drain & drop the tank and replace it with a used model. Yes, used parts of this nature CAN be useful and reliable for about 20% of the new part cost. I got mine on eBay with a 30-day warranty for about 50 bones, works great. New part - $289.00. BONUS- the fuel filter is only 6.99, may as well replace it since you're disconnecting lines anyway. Can't miss it during the tank drop procedure.

I had the same exact problem and the solution was to replace the fuel pump....located in tank...the pump is a little expensive but this happened around 75,000 miles and my brother had the exact same problem at almost the same milage....

2001 Malibu died and now will not crank

Same thing happened in my 03 Malibu-called Triple A. Before she sent anyone out, she told me to put the car in Neutral and try to start it-sure enough-and I was good to go. Try it maybe it will work. On my own, another freak thing, it wouldn't crank, pushed up on gear shift to make sure it was in park-I heard something click and it started. Sometimes it's the simplest. good luck.

Hello, I read your problem, and a lot of the symptoms you are describing seem like itmis possible, that you have a bad 02 sensor, this is part of your emissions, relating to the cadilac converter, it mostly acts up at lower speeds, like coming to a stop or slowing to make a corner. Sometimes also a bad fuel filter could cause this when rpms are down such as slowing or on corners. That is the two things I would check. Thanks mike

Hi I own A 98 Chevy Malibu, my ignition locked n i had to put a new ignition switch in, well now my cars tellin me Something Theft Service. Im wonder what I need to do? Iv unhooked battery for hours ect...

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

Problems starting

I own a 1998 Chevy Malibu personally, change the ignition switch I had the identical issue, the switch eventually stopped turning completely, my vehicle had to be towed!! Save yourself a headache, I got one from a junkyard for 2.00, but it had to be programmed for the vehicle, I would take it to a trusted shop or dealer.
