Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora

1 Answer

My 99 aurora is not turning over

Everytime we try to start it, we hear a click, but the engine never turns over. We know it isnt the battery because it still has more than enough power to start it.

My car wont turn over

If you are trying to start your car but when you turn the key all you hear is a faint click then this is a good indication that the starter motor needs replacing.
If how ever you need to get the car started then you can try the following:
1. locate the starter motor and give it a few hits with a hammer this may then enable you to start the car, but remember this isnt a permanent fix and could leave you stuck as it dont always work.
2 get someone to help you push the car whilst its in gear push it then release the clutch so the engine turns over with the ignition switched on if your going fast enough the engine should then fire up if not and the engine just turns over then give the starter another try on the key and you should find it will then start, remember this isnt permanent fix so get the starter replaced as soon as you can.

If when you turn the key you dont hear any clicking noise and you have tried the starter motor as listed above then their is a good chance you either have a flat battery in the key fob if you have central locking or it could even mean that your imobiliser is playing up if this is the case then their isnt much you can do yourself as they are not servicable and would require a garage to look at the fault.

Why won't my car start? What is making the clicking noises coming from the engine compartment?

soleniod on the starter motor is the most likely source of the clicking noise. The starter motor may be faulty and not cranking over the motor.

Car wont start, Not the Battery..Just Charged it(Checked at AutoZone)

If you are hearing a clicking sound but the engine is not cranking you may have a bad connection on one or both of your battery cables. If your cables check out good then your starter may need replacing.

Have the battery load tested, it sure sounds like you have a defective battery.

99 Aurora. 2nd starter. Car sometimes won't start. Sounds like starter solenoid. When it doesn't start, I turn the key and hear solenoid click. Mechanic claims it's not the starter. This happens about once...

We had the same issue on an 2001 Aurora. I left it for a year before it finally annoyed me enough to fix it. In our case it was the starter. The only difference was we didn't get a click of the solenoid when it happened.
I would guess the starter OR the alignment of the starter. If the starter is not aligned properly, sometimes when the solenoid engages it does not throw the gear out into the flywheel properly.
The "starts with a jump" doesn't make any sense to me. If this is really the case I would look at the battery and connections for an issue. If you do not have enough power to engage the starter properly this could be the issue.

My car wont start battery is not dead, but wont turn over?

if the battery is fine check if you hear a clicking noise coming from the starter motor when you turn the key to try and start the engine.
If you hear this noise then this is a good indication that the selenoid has failed meaning you need to replace the starter motor.

You can give the starter motor a hit with a piece of wood as some times this will get the starter motor working just to start the car but this isnt a permanent fix and could leave you stuck if you used the car.

Now if the starter motor isnt clicking but you hear a clicking noise coming from either the cars fuse box or the ecu when you turn the key to start the car then this would indicate a problem with the imobiliser this would need testing using a diagnostic machine as their is no other way of testing this to find out if its at fault.

Volvo 2.0 S40cd 1996 . Battery not flat but won't start , ignition lights flashing , engine won't turn over . Lights ok and central locking ok . tried to jump start from another vehicle but no effect .

hi, the problem you are having sounds like the starter motor has packed up if when you turn the key you get nothing or you might even hear a faint click, if you open the bonnet then get someone to turn the key you might hear a faint click coming from the starter motor. This click indicates the starter motor needs replacing.

you could try hitting the starter motor with a hammer give it a few good hard hits this might get the starter motor working for a while if not then it needs replacing at once if it works then this isnt a permanent fix so be warned.
