Question about Ford Tempo

1 Answer

HI My charging lite on my 1986 Ford Tempo LX will not go off. I found a frayed belt in between the alternator and engine. Could this be the issue or should I look at the alternator/voltage regulator. The battery is brand new. Thank you

1993fod tempo lx amplight keeps coming on done installed new battery and checked altanator

The battery indicator is not turned on by the battery it is a warning that the charging system is at fault, you have a failing diode in the alternator or a defective voltage regulator or a defective alternator connector. Knowing the history of this car's charging system from 25 years as a Ford dealer technician I would replace the Alternator with a Ford OEM remanufactured and the wiring harness connector to it as both are troublesome parts. DO NOT USE CHEAP AFTER MARKET REBUILT ALTENRATORS- solder and shrink tube all connectors.

The alternator light comes on and stays on. It has a new battery and alternator as well as new belts. What could be causing this ?

Can't guess, you need wiring diagrams to learn the
system with the fault & test things from there

Have you tested the output of the alternator under a load? Have that done because this sure sounds like a charging system issue. Most parts stores like Autozone will test the battery and Alternator for free.

Removing a 1987 ford tempo power steering pump

I believe you have 2 beltson this engine. One for the alternator, a short skinny one. Loosening the alternator bolts and pulling the alternator towards the front of the car, and then tightening the adjusting bolt.
The other belt runs the power steering, a/c compressor and water pump. I think it has an idler pulley with a jack screw adjusting screw. loosen the screw to releive belt tension. good luck

Yes, the voltage regulator is probably built in the alternator.
