Starting & Heating Problem

1997 Oldsmobile Bravada.
1st issue - doesn't want to start. I give it gas and it will start. Once it is started, it runs fine. I have changed the fuel filter. When I had my oil changed I had some fuel cleaning service done to it.

2nd isue - heat not blowing hot. I have checked the fluid in the raditor and it's fine. It will get semi-warm but not hot like it should be. Could this be my thermostat?

I'm sure you either got yours fixed or don't own anymore, but if anyone has this issue, mine did the same thing and it was the distributor cap. it would start sometimes then die, or not start for a few days.

The starting issue is most likely caused by a defective fuel pressure check valve in the fuel pump in the fuel tank, it causes exactly the problem u describe. The 2nd issue is caused either by the thermostat in the engine being defective or the air temperature control door motor being defective, have the thermostat tested before u replace it, if u have a temp guage for the engine if it reaches anywhere close to the center of the sweep the T-stat is OK.

1997 Oldsmobile Bravada ~ lots of $$ has already been spent to keep it running. Recently became reluctant to start. Generally turn key mid-way twice and then completely turn key and it starts. If try to...

It does sound like a weak fuel pump but you should check fuel pressure before you condem it. You should see readings in the mid 50s to 60 psi key on engine off. The check engine light may be a separate issue. You'll need to find out what code/s are stored in the PCM. A parts store like Autozone can help you with this.

I have a 1997 Bravada which has starting issues. If I crank the vehicle numerous times it will eventually start. Acts as though it might be a fuel problem, just not sure. Once started it will continue...

Hi Paul,
I think the problem with your vehicle is the coolant temperature sensor.
If you vehicle has an electric cooling fan there will be three sensors and if not there will be two.
The sensors will be located close to the thermostat housing and you're looking for the sensor with two cables not the sensor with a single cable.
Before removing it leave the engine to become cold....prefrably overnight....
Get a replacement and have it on hand, together with the required coolant to refill afterward.
  • Disconnect the cable socket and using a spanner of the correct size remove the sensor and replace with the new one....
  • Check the coolant level and top up the required amount. Replace the radiator cap.
  • As the engine will be cold you'll be able to notice immediately the improvement in starting.

2000 oldsmobile bravada, won't start. I replaced

This sounds familiar to me. I assume you replaced the fuel filter, if not, do so. Anyway, the same thing happened to be and I made it to the garage somehow and they said it was the pump, located inside the tank. 3 days later I picked it up and paid $350.00. It happened again a month later and I had it towed home ( the service garage changed hands and would not honor warranty). I unbolted and unstrapped the gas tank with a jack under it. The gauge said 1/4 tank so I figured on 40 lbs of fuel plus the tank.....wrong.... The tank was empty and the fuel pump had never been replaced. I has just never run my tank down that low before, so I had no way of knowing the gauge/float was miscalibrated. You never know....

1997 bravada wont start

Hook fuel pressure gauge up to port near firewall. A battery charger sometimes boosts the vehicle voltage just enough to engage weak fuel pump. Should show 50-60 lbs all the time while cranking when not starting on battery.

I need to know if there is a fuel censor for a 1997 olds.bravada and if so where is it located.

No safety if that is what you meant. Car not starting likely a bad fuel pump, common on Bravada / S10s. Try "thepartsladi" on eBay for low cost OEM part.

Starting Problem

The starting problem sounds like a weak fuel pump not having enough pressure to open the injectors on start up, this a common problem with these trucks. The pressure required to keep it running is lower than the pressure required to start it. You should be able to start it back up when it is warmed up but not on a cold start. These are the symptoms of a weak pump and they will only get worse. Your heating problem may be an air pocket in the heater core this is a known problem on the S-series. Try to elevate the front of the vehicle as high as you can then turn on the heat and try reving the motor if the air pocket is your problem this should take care of it. Let me know if i can help further and please rate.

I would suspect the ignition switch in the column is the issue. NOT where you place the key but the electronic part behind the key. Hope this helps
