It is a power mirror, and the parts store where I bought it said I had to remove the door panel.

Both above answers are not right... I just replaced the Pass side power mirror assembly on my 97 Expedition. No heat, no directional.
The inside door panel must come off.
1. pry off interior triangular plastic trim piece inside of door at mirror area. Remove door panel screw at this area.
2. Pry off power window switch panel and remove door panel screw at this area.
3.Remove interior door light cover and remove screw at this area.
4. Remove plastic cover at door handle.
5. The interior door panel can now be lifted up to release it from it's fasteners.
6. Disconnect light and push power window switch assembly through the door panel and it can be set aside.
7. Disconnect mirror power at coupler.
8 Loosen three mirror mounting screws with 7/16 socket. DO NOT unscrew completely.. the will fall down the door cavity. Use a round magnet on holder to remove the screws completely.
9.Thread electrical connection into door panel and install mirror.
10. Smile when mirror works and drink a beer!

You probably don't need to pull the door panel. On the outside of the mirror is a plastic trim cover. Use a trim stick to remove it to allow access to the screws holding the mirror in. Don't unhook them yet. On the inside, remove the plastic trim over the door/windshield pillar - first removing any grab handles that may be there. You don't say if this is a power mirror. If not, then that should do it. If it is, you may need to lift the dash cover up slightly with the trim stick to gain access to any electrical hookups.

Trim stick = soft tool for use in removing plastic pieces without messing them up.

To get the door panel off, you need to remove the arm rest. Look underneath for 2 - 3 screws and remove them. Using the trim stick, work around the edges of the door panel, ( I like to start at the bottom and work up. You will find resistance where there are clips holding the panel in place and with moderate tugging these should come free.

How do i replace the passenger side mirror?

Usually you need to take the door panel off to get access to the nuts that hold the mirror on. Once you get the panel off they are right there behind the mirror. You may not have to take the panel completely off, but it is usually easier to take off all the way. There are usually 3 nuts that hold it on. The wires harness will unplug, if you have heated mirrors or a blinker in the mirror.
Hope that helps!

3 10mm nuts located behind the interior door panel (directly behind the mirror assembly) attach the mirror to the door. Also there you will find the point of attachment for the power as well.

How to install passenger side view mirror Ford

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can access the bolts that secure the mirror onto the door

If you pull off the triangular black plastic trim behind the mirror, you will see the mirror wiring. If there is no plug, you will have to pull off the door panle. .....SOME Japanese cars have the plugs, but not all of them...Americian built cars do not. They are different.
