The only fluid expansion tank I know of is for the cooling system, and if that is the case you my have a leak in the transmission cooler that is built into the radiator.
SOURCE: man. transmision wont shift
it sounds like your slave cylinder as gone bad(throw out bearing) you'll have to have a shop remove the trans to fix this i would suggest that you get a new disc and pressure plate while you are paying to have this fixed sorry but this will be expensive as this is your clutch needing replaced
SOURCE: 1985 ford escort wil not shift out of 1st gear
this is very common with ford transmissions. it has gone bad if the fluid was low and not a bright red color then its defenantly bad. advice for ford vehicles if the fluid is bad do not change it this will also cause the same problem leave it alone and drive it till it takes a dump but i do believe your tranny is gone

Sounds like it might be leaking through the Torque Converter seal. Easy fix...just sucks having to take the tranny out again.

I have the same problem right now..Ive done some recearch and came up with the input and output censors on the transmission.Still waiting for the parts..I would diffently check into it before replacing the transmission...keep me posted
