Someone would check for voltage and a ground signal at the coil, then backtrack to the distributor.

96 ciera 2.2 ran fine. parkedat night next morn wont start.its getting fuel and fire but sounds like its not even trying to start

Check for spark.. pull one spark plug out set it on bare metal(away from cyl hole fuel could light from spark) turn vehicle over and look for spark should be a nice lightning bolt looking spark... blue spark is weak spark.. and see if it's getting spark...,, if not,,."try new plugs.,wires, distributor cap&rotor " also first.spray a little starting fluid down the injection system turn it over and see if it fires.if it does then it's a fuel issue prob not electrical... try that.hope it helps

Why does it turn over but won't start?

You need 3 basic things to make an engine run. 1 Compression, 2 Fuel, 3 Spark. So start buy checking for spark, remove a spark plug and plug it back into the wire. Now touch the threads of the spark plug to metal ( a good ground on the engine) and then turn the engine over (try to start it) and see if you have spark? No spark find the problem. If you have spark now see if you have fuel getting to the engine. You can try pouring a little fuel into the carb or throttle body and then see if the engine will fire or try to run. If it tries to run or fires you have a fuel problem. You need to find out why it is not getting fuel. Spark or fuel, 90% of the time are the main causes when an engine will not run. I hope this gets you started. Rod

1993 ford aero star won't start

Usually, sudden no starts are because either spark or gas has been lost. Spray some starting fluid into the throttle body intake, then try to start it. If it coughs and sputters and tries to run, then you know it was not getting gas. Check for fuel pressure, or check if the fuel pump is working.

If the starting fluid has no effect, the ignition system may be the problem. So check for spark. Buy a cheap spark tester and try it on a couple of spark plug wires. No spark when the engine is cranking over is definitely an ignition problem, possibly a bad ignition coil or bad ignition control module..

Truns over but want crank

An engine spinning just means your battery is good and starter works. You'll need to find out if you're getting the other things you need. Those being air, fuel, and spark.
For air, take the air filter out of the picture by removing the air flow going to the carb. Try to start the car.
if it doesn't start, for Fuel, try spraying into the carb some starting fluid then try starting the car. Does it run for a little bit with the starting fluid you just sprayed in there? If so, you've probably got a fuel problem.
If the engine still won't start, take one spark plug out and keep the spark plug wire attached to it. Make sure the spark plug is touching metal so it's grouned electrically, like laying against the engine block. Don't hold the spark plug because you can get a good shock if you hold it wrong. Just lay it on the engine block. Ttry starting the engine and watch for spark at the end of the spark plug. Sometimes the spark is hard to see so doing this at night or in a garage will make it easier to see the spark which leads me to another point. Sometimes your sparkplug wires get so old they electrically aren't any good anymore. You'll be able to know that if you start your car at night and you look under the hood and see little sparks jumping from your spark plug wires to ground. This means your spark plug wires need replacing and that could be your problem. Usually the engine will run when this happens but it won't run very good as most of the spark is being shorted out.
So try to isolate where the problem is...Air, Fuel, or Spark and go from there.

2005 dodge caravan timing belt

Your problem is almost never jumped timing. Won't start or even try to start with starter fluid? It probably lost spark (ignition). Do as boaauto says and check for spark on a plug wire. Look for a sharp blue spark. If none on that plug wire, try one more. Orange or intermittent spark is same problem as no spark. Loss of ignition spark could be due to bad coil, bad ignition coil control module (ICM), bad or missing crank position sensor, or a problem in the pcm (which is least likely possibility).
A cheap spark tester should be purchased for spark testing- that way you stand no chance of getting an electrical shock when testing.

2004 trailblazer doesn't start on first try. It cranks and eventually starts but usually 3-6 tries. Once started it runs fine. I have no check engine light. We have replaced the spark plugs, b

For engine to run it has to have:
Fuel, air and spark.
So if it doesn't start, something's missing.
Is your fuel pressure OK? Is your spark present? Is ECM firing injectors?
Check all those basics and I'm sure you'll find what's wrong.

My 1994 Jeep grand cherokee won't start. It tries to start but doesn't. Tried replacing cap and rotor and still will not start. When I checked the spark it was yellow. What does that mean?

Yellow means weak spark should be blue check the coil tower where the coil wire attaches on the coil for corrosion. Also check the spark plugs for wear.

Mazda RX 8 was running parked it overnight and will not run. Change the coil pack and spark plugs. It still will not start. If you think it could be the fuel filter tell me where its at or any other info...

I would like you to verify spark. You can get a spark tester from a local part store for less than $10. Just pull the coil off of a spark plug, put the tester in the coil, ground the coil with the clip to a clean metal surface (preferably the block), and have someone try to start the engine. Only turn the key long enough to see if you have spark at the tester, shouldn't be more than a few seconds. If you have spark, put the coil back on the plug in the engine, spray some starting fluid in the air intake and see if the engine tries to start on the fluid. If it does, then we can be mostly certain you have a fuel issue. Let me know the results of the test. You can try spraying the starting fluid before you do the spark test. If the engine doesn't try to start on the fluid, then you need to do the spark test.

I just got a 1991 Dynasty Dodge knowing it needed repairs. Vehicle tries to start, but doesn't. Had starter replaced and the battery is pretty new. I'm not sure if it's the fuel pump, I'm...

Need to check if you have fuel pressure and spark, then you can go from there, don't just throw parts at it.
Spray brake cleaner in the intake to see if it starts, if it does start then this eliminates the spark, if it doesn't then check for spark, get back to me and let me know
