The solenoids like all GM transmission are inside the ****** attached to a part called the valve body which they open and close passages in to shift gears. You must remove the sheet metal belly pan of the transmission to access them, There is no drain pan and it is a hugely messy job without the proper equipment like a huge drain pan.

SOURCE: I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt that is'nt shifting gears right

My daughter has a 2003 with the same problem. She took it to a highly regarded transmission shop. They told her it is not the transmisison but an engine performance problem. She took it for an oil change to check the filters etc and the fuel filter is bad. I will follow up if that fixes the problem.

SOURCE: Hard Shift to 2nd Gear/next gear

Your going to have to get your car scaned for codes. Auto Zone can scan it for you for free and tell your what you'll need to fix it.
It sound's like your VSS Sensor (speed sensor) is not working and your ECM is not getting the signal from the transmission to know when to shift the gears.
Becareful not to burn out the transmission till you get it fixed. The sensor it self is not that expansive and to replace it is easy and takes about 30 min to do.
If you get a P0720 or a P0722 code, then it's your speed sensor. It's an esy fix and Auto Zone can give you instrction on how to change it.
Good luck, it takes about 30 min to change and hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2005 Pontiac Vibe having trouble shifting 1st 2nd code P2716 MIL

This is most likely due to a bad solenoid pack in transmission. You could have tranny serviced and see if it helps. Poor fluid condition makes valves stick in those.

Were are the gear shift solenoids located on a 2006 pontiac grand prix gt supercharged v6 engine HD transmission

Hi,

Please check within the transmission near the valve body assembly. This is where the shift solenoids should be.

Thank you.

My 1995 pontiac grand am gt v6 3100 wont drop into 1st& 2nd gear has drive and overdrive

1 - 2 shift solenoid problem , maybe . Need to look at a wiring diagram for 1-2 shift solenoid electrical circuit , an test for a open solenoid using a Ohmmeter . Do you know how to do that . Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb/ Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model an engine . Under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on fuel controls . Click the search button then click the second blue link. Scroll down to the # 7 diagram. In the diagram they call them shift A & shift B solenoids . A would be the one to check . Pull the fuse for the shift solenoids an find connector one at the PCM - engine computer . Pin # 11 . Put one ohmmeter lead at pin # 11 an one at the fuse . Not the battery power side of the fuse . Should show some resistance ( 4 or 5 ohm ) If the meter shows infinite resistance it's open an there is your problem .

The transmission won't shift if the speedometer doesn't work. Try replacing the vehicle speed sensor.
