It sounds to me like your electrical system is having a hard time regulating itself. I would start by checking the negative battery cable connections for corrosion...also make sure the negative cable is well grounded to the engine block or frame. I had a Trans Am that kept throwing alternators when I was 16. Someone told me to check the negative and after a couple more alternators I did. It was grounded from battery to a sheetmetal bracket. On the engine block no more then 18" away I found an almost greased clogged hole barely visible. unbolted from sheetmetal and bolted right into block. If not negative cable you could have a voltage regulator problem, which is in your alternator, and would probably all be replaced at once. Most parts stores that carry alternators can check your whole charging system. If neither remedies problem the start looking for wiring harnesses that have had fasteners break allowing them to lay to close to hot engine components. Pretty often some of the plastic fasteners will become brittle and break, or may not be re-installed properly by clumsy lube attendants.

Go to an auto repair store and have them check everything. If you do not know cars, your best bet is to get it checked out rather than take risks.

Mazda Protege wont start.. changed starter

If the starter was bench tested before the install and therefore is a good starter (I have seen new starters out of the box not work.) You will have to consider the possibility that you are having a problem with the contact base of the ignition switch( the electric part of the switch is separate from the key tumblers). Did you bench test your old starter to see if it was still good. If it was still good that would point to the contact base of the ignition switch.

2003 mazda has a good battery and wont turn over. Lights and radio all work good

if the battery is good but the starter wont work then you need to replace your starter. it is held on by two bolts and has 2-3 wires on it. the hardest part of changing the starter is getting to it. sometimes the starter turns but wont turn the right speed anymore, so the engine wont fire.

Which bolts on the altenator and power steering pump need to be loosened to release the belts on a 2003 Mazda Protege?

I don`t know that there is a bolt to loosen the belt tension. There should be a automatic tensioner that you pull back and hold to remove the belt.
