Question about 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

1 Answer

Electrical??? A few weeks ago my battery light started coming on while I was driving just suddenly. So I took it in and battery checked out fine and so did the alternator. Just tonight the battery light came on again then the abs light then all my lights started to dim, battery dropped low and when I push on on my breaks to slow the RPM needles starts jumping around. When I made it home the truck died and wont start now. Any suggestions on what it could be. I have given up on this truck.

I called around this morning and everyone seems to think it is the battery. But the truck started just fine this morning with no warning lights coming on but when running it idles kinda of low.

Yep it was the alternator. After getting tested all day it finnally started acting up after I picked it of from the shop.

Tried to start and the battery light came on and no other indicatiors. swapped battery with someone else and it started right up. Took old battery to recharge and it was bad.

Used another good battery and everything comes on but it won't turn over. The person that took out the battery I think did something so it won't start. Does anyone know where I can get a layout of the fuse box and relays. This one is missing the paper on the door. Not sure if maybe they pulled a fuse or relay.

Since you've checked your voltage at the battery and alternator and they are ok, I would say it seems like an electrical issue. You need to put the truck on a diagnostic scanner to see what part (electrical part) is malfunctioninig.

How old is the car? batteries usually last around 6 years. If you put a load on the battery ( a shop can do this) you can tell if the battery is going bad. Also, you might have a problem with the alternator. I would suggest having the alternator checked out first, because if you change the battery and the alternator is still bad, you might wind up purchasing a second battery if you kill this new one. The strange thing is you stated the car drops voltage while on, this usually is the alternator, a car can actually run without a battery once it's started, it runs horrible but it will work. If you're experiencing drops in voltage while the car is on I would check out the alternator.

My car driving it and all of a sudden it started jerking and then all the lights on the dash started blinking, then it went away, and then a little bit later it happened again

There are shops that can check the electrical system. It might be the alternator. You need to find a mechanic to do some measurements.

Electrical short

Your problem is pointing to the alternator. Since you say the alternator is only a year old, the I would check the tension on the belt (deflection should be about 1/2 an inch), and the belt itself. Your problem most likely lies in either the belt, belt tensioner (if applicable), or alternator.

2002 sequioa sudden stall

Often when the battery is disconnected or replaced the computer will lose it's learned idle settings. You could try letting the engine idle in park until the engine temperature comes up to normal and leave it like that for a few minutes, then put the Air con on and let it idle again for a few minutes, then switch the air con off and put it into drive. If it does not stall, let it idle in drive for 2 minutes or so, and then do the same with the Air con on. This should relearn the base idle settings and stop it from stalling on you. Before you carry out this procedure you should make sure that when you replaced the battery you didn't remove any other plugs or knocked anything that may be causing the fault. If you try this procedure and it still stall when you select drive, you will need to get a Mechanic to check the vehicle over.

Hope this helps,
