Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be repaired. Finding out what codes are stored is the first step.

You need to find out what the code is. Without that, I could name about a million different things that could cause it. Please get it scanned and let me know.

Any number of things including a loose gas cap!

Give it a week to see if it goes off!

If your really worried go to an auto parts store and ask them to do a code scan. Advanced Auto Parts usually will do this for free!

    Any other Problems?

    Good Luck

Go to advance auto parts or any other auto parts store and they will lend you a trouble code reader. you need to give them your license and they'll give you the reader to use. they'll show you how to hook it up, but you plug the reader to the plug (usually right near the driver's feet) and turn the car on. in a few seconds, the reader will tell you what the issue(s) is (are).

Take the car to a diagnotic centre where it can be scanned. It does not necessarily mean the car has a problem but there is an error message generated from its transmission. No panic

This could be any number of issues, if the car hesitates slightly and jerks on occasion, it could be a coolant sensor, If you have a vaccuume hose that is cracked or dislodged that will also cause a light to go on. I would suggest going to autozone and get your codes checked. This will give you a more specific area to look in.

THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF REASONS WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT MAY BE ON. YOU NEED TO PULL A CODE IN ORDER FOR SOMEONE TO HELP YOU DIAGNOSE THIS. USUALLY IF YOU GO TO AN AUTOZONE OR PARTS STORE THEY WILL PULL THE CODE FOR YOU FOR FREE

My 2007 Toyota Camry just hit 45,000 miles and my check engine light came on. Would regular maintenace needed cause the light to come on? What should I / could I expect when I take it in?

I do believe there is a difference between a maintenance light and a check engine light. You can take your vehicle to most parts suppliers (auto zone, pep boys) and they will check your computer codes for free.

1994 camry will stall while driving normal speeds. Check engine light and airbag light comes on. Vehicle will start immediately but lacks power and misfires. After cool off vehicle will perform properly...

4cyl or V6?? Have your ignition coil checked and you vehicle scanned for the check engine light. If this is a 4cyl the coil is inside the distributor cap (possible oil leaking into the cap, very common on 4cyl camrys). If its a V6, have the Crank and cam sensors inspected. Hopefully this helps!!

Semi loud vibrating sound when car is idle, does this mean a tune up or timing belt problem? 1996 Camry

Not sure of the mileage requirement for a timing belt change, but the problem could be multiple things, many of which a tune up would find & repair:
Plugs & Plug wires
fuel filter
air filter
Any of the emissions systems

If fuel filter or air filter are due for replacement, can start there relatively cheap.

How many miles total on vehicle? How many miles since any major work or tuneup? Has timing belt ever been changed & if so, when?

Does sound go away totally when driving? Try driving along side a wall, where the sound can bounce back at you, with windows open, radio & A/C off, to see if you hear anything. Wondering about exhaust system leaks.

Need more information to determine more likely causes.

2002 toyota engine, oil sludgecaused my car to stopped and now needs overhaul

Complain to Toyota, they are fixing some of these car for free. Here is the explanation and the list of problem vehicles.

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge can be a major contributor to Internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. Sludge is usually caused by the presence of water in the oil, and can accumulate with use. Ways to minimize sludge production and accumulation includes performing frequent oil changes, using synthetic oil, and following the manufacturer's engine maintenance routine.
The following engines were reported by the Center for Auto Safety and/or their manufacturers to have a problem with sludge accumulation:

  • 1996-2001 Toyota 3.0 L 1MZ V6
  • 1996-2001 Toyota 5SFE I4
  • Feb 23, 2009 | 1995 Toyota Camry
