Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

Gas mileage drop

Month ago - had 1/4 tank gas - turned corner - needle dropped straight down to E - eventually went back to 1/4.
Gas mileage has dropped from 150 miles at 1/2 tank to 110.
While slowing for merge lane - acted like it was going to cut off. All this has happened within a 2 month period.

One person said - gas w/ethenol is clogging injectors, fuel sending unit and filters. Add fuel treatment and don't use gas w/ethenol.

1 mechanic said - needs a tune up
another mechanic - needs fuel pump - pump alone is almost $350

I'm a female and tired of being ripped off. Did alot of work on 1990 RS Camero including replacing fuel filter, trany service, plugs wires.

I change oil myself and replaced plugs & wires on 1997 Rav4, but nothing else. If it is fuel filters (I understand there are 3 and $100 a piece). Can you tell me location and if I would be able to change them???

Can you please help me! Thanks so much. Eager to learn an fix myself!!!

I think you may have two problems. The first is a fuel level sending unit. That is what causes the gas gauge to fluctuate so badly. Are you checking fuel according to the gauge or are you checking against mileage on the trip odometer that has been reset each time you fillup?
When the sending unit goes bad, you have to rely on mpg to be your guide for when you are really out of fuel. The sending unit gets replaced by pulling the gas tank.

As for the slack performance, you may need fuel filters, or a vacuum leak corrected, or any of a number of things. Sorry, it's like a needle in a haystack without a thorough diagnosis.

It is not the fuel pump if you hear it when you turn the key. you will hear a whirring noise. that's the fuel pump.A fuel pump will usually go out suddenly. Could be you need spark plugs if you replaced the wires. Always be sure to properly gap the spark plugs with a small guage you can buy for a couple dollars or less.you could add fuel injector cleaner to your tank just to make sure. The fuel filter (need only one) run from $30-36 dollars. the air filters cost about $16-17 dollars. go to Amazon .com to get an idea of the prices. he reason the needle on the fuel gauage goes down is that with a 1/4 tank the gas inside the tank moves and the electric guage float moves as you turn. With more gas you will not see that too often. Is it a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive ? The 4 wheel drives use more gas. You can go to toyotanation dot com to find any thing toyota related.Clean the IAC Valve (idle control valve) just inside where you remove the duct work from the air filter.Spray it with brake cleaner or carburator cleaner towards the fuel system. With the engine running at about 1200 rpms.Do this several times, you can see the valve inside. It can also be removed and cleaned. they get full of gunk and oil residue.I don't think the 97 has cabin air filters.Only the air filter.it is not as bad as you think. Hope this helps you out.

Ok just for starter, this vehicle may be due for a tune up, but what affects fuel economy more than a tune up are oxygen sensors(02 sensors). just in-case you don't know because you seem very knowledgeable, they are located in the exhaust system. start from the manifold and work you way down to the tail pipe, they look like spark plug with electrical wires attached to the color of wires are white, black and grey. About they fuel filter no they are not 100 dollars each, much less than that, however one is located in the gas tank and other is outside of the tank. Contact me if you need more help. Good Luck

I sounds like you have an electrical problem with the dashboard. It will have to be pulled and checked.

I had the same problem with the gas tank on my 95 mustang. You are going to have to drop the tank. There is a rubber seal where the filler neck goes into the gas tank that has failed and must be replaced. You are losing even more gas than you think. Everytime you make a left turn gas is sloshing out through that bad seal.

Change fuel filter in a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander

prev.gif next.gif Fuel Filter The fuel filter is part of the fuel tank module. (in the fuel tank)

It's kind of difficult to drop a fuel tank and replace the fuel tank module due to the weight and danger of gasoline catching fire or exploding.

2000 Ford Expedition Starting problem

If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.

Poor gas mileage on my jeep liberty

change your spark plugs if they haven't been changed in awhile. check your tires for the propper psi there should be a sticker on the inside of your drivers door that will tell you recomended air pressures go by this not the recomendations on the tires. also where are you getting you gas does it contain ethanol sometimes this can burn faster.

Poor gas mileage on my jeep liberty

Did this happen overnight or was it a gradual loss? Did you do any kind of repair before you lost the gas mialage? Is there a check engine light on or did it come on and go off? Did anything weird happen before the jeep got bad gas mileage? It's hard to diagnose a problem like this without actually touching the car.
Any other info might help me steer you in the right direction.

Jeep liberty gas mileage

to increase gas mileage make sure you keep on top of tire air pressure you can also have your tires filled with nitrogen instead of air also a K&N air filter does wonders and is good for lifetime worth every penny. another smart move is to use a fuel system cleaner regularly Lucas makes great products for this try local parts store.
