These cars are a 4 speed auto
it you here the car change 4 times then it is going in to od
best way to try this is by following

  1. go to an open rood where you can do 100kph (60mhp)
  2. have your overdrive turned off (there should be a light on the dash board that comes on)
  3. then turn over drive on and see if the RPM drops
if it dose not work let me know and i will try my best to help you

3,0L Ford ranger 91 want shift into over drive.did before I pulled trans to replace rear main seal in Truck.please help

Overdrive is engaged with a torque convert clutch lockup. ATF travels through the splined shaft on the transmission to the torque converter. Check the seals on the converter and the trans.

My 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 4.0L V6 has an overdrive problem. It shifts into all gears normally and runs like a top. The only problem is when I really step on the gas and kick it into overdrive, the truck...

when you step on the gas to the floor the trans is not trying to shift into overdrive, over drive connects as you are at a steady speed which lowers rpm and increase fuel mpg. when you step on the gas hard you are telling the trans to down shift to a passing gear, which calls for more fuel and air which is what you are not getting. A few things could cause this, bad crank sensor, ecm, fuel pump, fuel filter, knock sensor etc. I would get a full blown diagnostic done which will check fuel press, timing, sensors, codes, etc normally around $100.00 . But have this done at a very reputable shop and be there when they do it so they can explain everything to you, and make sure you understand things before somebody starts saying well it could be this and now i think its this or that.

1988 ford ranger 2.9l v6 runs great except a little ticking under the hood. main concern though is that it wont shift into drive when i hit the freeway. about 35 top speed. ideas?

I have a 91 ranger. There are two band adjustments on the transmission that is supposed to be adjusted every 60K miles. There are two adjustments, one for overdrive and the other for everything else. The overdrive adjustment is closest to the front of the transmission and the other is back behind it closer to the shift lever on the driver side. The locking nut is a 19" and there is a tool you get for the other nut. I have found a 3/8th (I believe) 12 point socket will fit on the square. You loosen the lock nut, then you tighten the band adjustment bolt to 10 foot pounds. Then you back the bolt off 2 full turns, then hold it in place while re-tightening your lock nut. I had to adjust my bolt in 1/4 turns at a time after test driving to get the transmission to shift just right.

1989 ford ranger- "D" vs overdrive

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
