I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. You might want to check the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Electrical Power Distribution center located in the black box located just in front of the coolant fill container on the left side under the hood. This is a 40 amp fuse, orange in color and is the orange fuse closest to the firewall. This fuse is used to put the jeep in storage if you don't plan to drive it for a while. Which would stop the current flow and not allow your battery to die. GOOD LUCK!

Which is the correct alternator, and total amps for jeep grand cherokee 2001, 4.0 engine ?

Check this out at an accredited auto electrician specialist shop as the amperage rating for the alternator will depend on what the system need and what extra amps are required for any electrical item that has been added to the vehicle (sound systemr, spot lights, fog lights etc)

Immobilizer light stays on engine won't start

Make sure the key isn't on a keyring, and if you have a spare key try holding it against the ignition barrel whilst trying to start the car. Failing that, it's an auto electrician job. China OBD2 car diagnostic tools wholesale on CareUCar

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee has started needing a jump to get started about once a week.. had the alternator and battery tested, both are good. 2 nights ago it wouldnt start, so I got a jump and drove it...

I would have a load test done on the battery as there is a dead cell evident from the number of jump starts you need. Have an auto electrician test the alternator for charge rate and out put. check drive belt condition and tension.
