Can't get the old power steering pump off to install the new one

Trying to replace the power steering pump on my 2002 Tahoe V8 5.3L vin Z but can't get the old pump off. Already got the belt and pulley off and am at a stand still. Have the Chilton's manual which is virtually useless at this point. Has anybody done this before? Please help!

First of all why are you doing it? I am having an issue with my 02 Tahoe, 5.3, 4wd, that mainly when turning left, at any speed, usually when not on the gas, it is hard to turn. Feather the gas, and all is fine. Does occur to the right sometimes, but not as noticeable. I did order an new pump, and am changing it Friday night, Jan 2. I will let you know if you did not already complete.

I did replace mine, but it appears to be the gear box. Assuming you removed the radiator shroud, just the top half. There are 3 bolts holding the PS pump to the main support which also supports the alternator. Also remove a bolt holding another PS pump bracket, on the back, to the engine block. There is also a small bracket which holds two wiring harnesses against the PS pump which needs to be removed. Also remove two small bolts on the side of the large bracket near the alternator, to free up wiring. Next gets tricky but makes it much easier. Remove the bolts holding the large bracket with alternator and kind of move it up and towards center of engine and either have a friend hold it or bungy cord it. You do not have to remove the alternator from bracket, your choice. The PS pump will not just squeeze thru unless you move this. Hope this helps. It took about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Good time to replace your main serpentine belt and for the AC. My AC belt was shot, and believe me for the 15 bucks, do it now.

2002 tahoe enginge will turn over, however, the wheel will not turn

most likely the power steering pump shaft has broken. its hard to detect this becuase the pully on the power steering pump still turns with the serpentine belt.

Loud noise in the steering column;gear box replacd recently

Dealer, but did you check the Power steering fluid level??or any leaks. There are two hose that connect to the gear box from the power steering pump. if the pump is low on fluid you lose your power steering, if the hose has a leak or it blew and lost the power steering fluid then you lost your power steering again.
Check the fluid level to the power steering pump and any leaks or broken hose to the gear box.
Keep me posted, be glad to help and good luck.

Believe it or not there are some problems you should take to the dealer. It never was the gear box, its a defective steering column bushing. That problem had a factory notice and the dealer would have diagnosed it immediately an fixed it free parts +$40.install. Tahoes get that problem.
