Question about 2000 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Battery drains down over night

I have a 2000 Durango with a 5.9 magnum V8. If the battery is left hooked up it is completey dead by morning. Checking it over I found that it is drawing 12.8 volts and almost 6 amps. I noticed that when I unhook and rehook the battery there is a clicking noise behing the passenger air bag Battery is new. I worked with a multi tester and pulled each fuse individually and it made no difference on the voltage being drawn from the battery. I also unhooked the radio, rear wiper, and alternator completely with the same result.

I had the same problem and took it to three different mechanics, only the last one seemed to solve the problem - and they don't really know what they did. Everything checked out fine with the amp draw and could not find any shorts anywhere in the electrical system. the first time it happened, I thought it was just the battery, so I bought a replacement. I bought the battery that the replacement guide suggested. Still had the problem. The last mechanic said everything was fine, but noticed that the battery was undersized for the vehicle. They replaced the battery with a bigger one and have not had the issue since. I have the 5.2L 4X2. I had t he clicking noise behind the passanger airbag as well.

That click noise is nothing! when you put neg post on then positive sparky? if so probably solenoid circuit ignition on starter will draw power but will "NOT " engaged until you crank Key!!

Check your convience and vanity type lighting to be sure they are shutting off( underhoodlight, glove box, back sun visor mirror lights, etc...). Next you can use a clamp on amp draw gun and follow the draw thru the harness to the problem. This tool is available at most auto parts stores. Also, just because a battery is new doesn"t mean it Good!

Battery goes flat over night

You'll need to have someone check for a battery drain.
Something in the car is using electricity when the key is off, or the battery has an internal short and is draining itself.
If you disconnect the battery overnight and it is still dead in the morning, you need a new battery.

My battery keeps draining down at night it's a 99 dodge durango

you have something draining the battery, check for any lights that might be staying on,interior light, stop light under the hood light(if any),glove box light trunk light, if you have a multimeter with amp testing capability or an amp meter you can check where the drain is by removing each fuse & put the probes on each side the terminals until you find a drainage, that way you might be able to find out what is draining the power & rectify it......hope this helps......cheers

Have you checked the automatic tensioner? It sounds like your belt may be slipping, causing the alternator to not charge the battery as quickly as it needs to, which puts a lot of strain on a battery.

I would have the automatic tensioner checked and replaced, and install a new belt.

both, the battery has been run down too many times and your radio have a heavy power draw,if you have an aftermarket alarm it may have something to do with the problem.

check battery and connections first starting requires 300 plus amps lights about 50 so lights work but not enough to start try jump and if starts take to parts store and have then test battery
