Can't shift out of 4WD on the fly in my 97 Toyota 4runner

I have to come to near complete stop in my 97 T4Runner to get out of 4WD. Any ideas what may be wrong?

I would never have guessed that but as a matter of fact I just had the rear driver side tire replaced under warranty. All four are the same tire brand and model but the new tire is brand new and all the others have near 60K miles on them. What you suggest may well be the problem. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm going to replace the other rear tire with a new one, will that solve the problem or must I replace all four to resolve?

Thank you for the assistance, I really appreciate it. If needed I will get three new tires instead of one.

I woul guess tires that are mis-matched, or tires that have unequal tread depths.

To pe perfectly honest, the 4WD engeagement.disengagement is compromised when tires are not the same mfgr and tread depth.

You might get lucky with one additional tire, but I am not confident that this will "fix" it; it may help, however.

The graciousness of a FixYa rating would be greatly appreciated.

This might sound like a silly question but did you put the truck in neutral before you shifted into 4L ? Reason being transfer case damage can occure if it wasnt in neutral when you shifted into 4L.

2002 4Runner - 4 wheel drive indicator won't go off

When the transfer case is not engaged for extended periods of time, the motor inside for the 4WD sticks. Try this: Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and do some tapping on the case while switching the 4WD indicator. Sometimes, this will free up the contacts inside the 4WD shift motor.

Hope this helps. Thank you for choosing FixYa for assistance.
