There is a small set screw that holds the mirror to the small metal button. Most vehicles use a small Phillips screw but some use a Hex Key Wrench (Allen Wrench) type screw. Slide the mirror off the button. Make sure not to remove the glue before you put the button back on. Trace around the glue with a grease pencil on the outside of the windshield before you remove it. So you know exactly where to replace the button. You can buy a Rear View Mirror Adhesive Kit for around five dollars.
This is slightly tricky, you need to pull out and completely clean the metal piece that the mirror attaches to. Go to the auto parts store and get a rear view mirror install kit, follow the directions EXACTLY. There is usually a primer and then a small amount of glue. nothing else works.
do you have a little button on the left side of your dash to turn on the defrosted mirrors? or do you have a little def emblem in the lower corner of the mirrior glass?
At most auto parts stores, they carry what is called "Rearview mirror adhesive" - It costs about $4 or $5, and comes is a little "blister" package. It is a special two-part adhesive (utilizing a pre-cleaner and a "gluing" agent) that is REQUIRED for installing these mirrors on glass - Super glue will not work for this,... All you will do with superglue is make a mess... - The adhesive isn't terribly hard to use, but it does require a bit of patience, and I'd recommend following the instructions to a "T" for the best results (Temperature, time, etc..). Hope that helps some...
On my '97, there was a triangular shaped piece of plastic on the inside trim that had to be removed. I think all three mounting screws were under that. It's been a few years, but I think that was how it was done. I remember it was pretty easy though.
If it goes directly attached to the windshield, you will have to remove a metal piece of metal from the mirror base. This will have to be glued with epoxy glue to the windshield holding it it with tape overnight. After this you can put the mirror back.
