Ensure fuse link in system is not burned out first.
Check ignition switch circuit, ensure the ignition switch works, if good then you need to check starter solenoid to make sure it works. If solenoid is not the type above the starter (Fords have it separate) change solenoid, If its with the starter, change starter.
If you hear a click when you turn to start, and no turn over,,,change the starter.
How do you know it's good? Unless you've had a load test done on it, it could be bad. Sometimes a cell is bad in the battery. You can jump start it, and will run fine until you cut it off. I'd also run a amp check on your alternator. Your alter. may not be producing enough amps. Anything below 13 amps, could be the problem. Or a loose belt. Check everything throughly before buying another battery.

I have owned my 1996 Cavalier for just over a month and I notice that it seems to rev alot when you start moving forward and takes along time to find second gear. The car also jerks sometimes when you put your foot on the pedal to move from a stop position ie: waiting at the lights. Can anyone give me any ideas to what this might mean? Is it the transmission?
