Question about 1992 Jeep Wrangler

I have a Jeep Wrangler 1992. Replaced rear axle with a Ford 8.8 axel rear end and installed all new brake rotors, callipers, hoses, metal lines, forward brake discs, hoses. Have bled reapeatedly....pumping and numatic suction brake bleeders. Still no brakes. Will not build up pressure. Wondering about the prop. valve? Opened it and cleaned it...looks fine. I think brakes work fine...wife disagrees. Unable to get brakes to bleed could the prop. valve be to blame. Followed all instructions in Hanes Manual. Help.

The proportioning valve most definately can be the problem. Did you change it or is it the original? (A disc/drum system uses a 70%front/30%rear braking ratio, whereas an all-disc system is alot more even). I would first bleed the master cylinder. Then I would 'gravity bleed' the rest of the system by opening the bleeders on all 4 wheels. Do not at any point let the m/cylinder go dry. Also, do not touch the brake pedal.
Continuously check all 4 bleeders, when clean brake fluid with no bubbles at all is running from a bleeder, close it. When all 4 wheels are done, recheck the fluid level and you should be OK.
Pump the pedal to 'self-adjust' the rear calipers, then re-check the fluid level.
Any problem after that means you either have a loose connection (it's possible for a tiny leak to let air in, but not let fluid leak), a leak, or you need a new (disc/disc type) proportioning valve. I would try Summit Racing myself. Good Luck!

Personally I would replace both rotors to prevent a future brake imbalance.

* chock rear wheels, raise front of vehicle and place on stands.

* remove wheels, remove brake calliper and bracket assemblies.

* remove bearing hubs from axles, via removal of bearing adjustment nut

*remove hub seals, clean and inspect bearings, repack with HT bearing grease.

* the brake rotor bolts to the rear of the hub, you will have to remove and replace rotor to hubs, make sure all bolts are thread locked with loctite 263 and tensioned to spec.

* pack hub with grease, install seals, fitt hub assembly and adjust wheel bearing preload, install new split pins.

* fitt brake calliper and brackets, fit new brake pads,

* fitt wheels lower vehicle, test brake for function

How to remove rear axle

Rear axle removal is along the same lines on most vehicles.
Raise the car and put it on blocks.
Support the weight of the axle
Remove the propshaft
You have to disconnect the flexible brake hoses from the callipers.
Disconnect the shock absorbers where they connect to the axle casing.
Depending on the set up of the vehicle, you'll have to disconnect other items such as control arms and undo the bolts that connect the springs to the axle - this varies depending on the vehicle set up.

It is possible to remove an axle without having to remove the road wheels/brake rotors and callipers .. but again, this can depend on what sort of vehicle you have.

Now I've changed rubber brake hose and hard line to the T on rear axle, bled system and left rear brake still drags. All new pads and rotors all around and new calipers in rear. And great pedal.


the callipers actually slide on two pins that are part of the mount to the axle. this sliding action allows the callipers to centralize over the rotor disc
if you are experiencing a dragging brake then remove the pads and see if you can slide the calliper on those pins
if not you will have to remove the pins and clean the rust and gunk out of the holes in the calliper
they do rust up and seize which gives dragging brakes especially after fitting new pads.

Front end grinding noise


Several possibilities. Sound transmits through metal. The rear Emergency brakes will lose their lining and the linings fall into the rear brake drum. They will often pulverize the material and the piles of debris will shift when backing up and repeat the process going forward.
Rust on the front rotors. Constant battle. Can rust in 3 days enough to make noise. Sticking caliper or rubber brake hose is breaking down inside and blocking brake fluid return. Fluid has pressure to tighten caliper but relies on gravity/suction return. Rubber brake hoses internally can form flaps which act like 1 way gates.
Check other front axle for same parts, maybe 1/2 shaft is failing.

I need the line that goes between the master cylinder and slave cylinder for my 1992 jeep wrangler and cannot find the part anywhere..any ideas?????


any parts store will have steel and flex hoses of differing lengths and sizes hanging on the wall for brake and clutch lines. you need someone to measure, make, and bend the line and install it for you.
takes a tool to flare the ends and bend without crimping

After replacig master cylinder, callipers, brake line and proportioning valve when rotors heat up both front wheels lock up from pressure from callipers


Good Evening, it sure sounds like master cylinder however if you replaced lines have you replaced the rubber hose from the line to the caliper on each side. Those things with any amount of age can restrict flow after things warm up and then end up not letting your caliper bleed off. Hope this helps.

do u mean the axle has "play" when u grab the tire and wiggle it up and down?? if it has play, then it propbably needs an AXLE SEAL AND AXLE BEARING.you will have to carefully inspect the axle itself where the bearing rides for any gouging or damage. THIS JOB requires a decent amount of mechanical skill. 1ST you need to remove the rear end COVER and drain out the gear oil into a drain pan.2ND remove the brake caliper and rotor . 3RD spin the" ring and pinion " around until u see a 5/16 bolt that passes thru from the pass. side to the drivers side. u have to remove this bolt. u will need to "hold "the gears from turning in order to break loose this bolt. 4TH remove this bolt and slide out the large metal ""PIN" that 'divides" the rear end in half. NOW CAREFULLY WITHOUT TURNING THE REAR END SPIDER GEARS,PUSH IN THE AXLE TOWARDS THE INSIDE SO U CAN REMOVE THE "C-CLIP" AT INNER END OF AXLE. now u can slide out axle and youll be able to replace seal and if needed axle bearing. let me know if u need more info.

I have a 94 jeep wrangler front left axle seal bad. I took the left side apart and not sure how to get the seal back in. Do I need to open the inspection cover on the diff. and take the gears out?



Rear Axle Notes
  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove rear wheels.
  3. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft from axle.
  4. Disconnect the track bar from axle mounting bracket.
  5. Disconnect parking brake cable at equalizer.
  6. Disconnect shock absorbers at axle tubes.
  7. Disconnect hydraulic brake hose at rear axle Tee-fitting, then tape ends of hose and fitting to prevent contamination.
  8. Disconnect axle vent tube from axle.
  9. Remove U-bolts and tie plates.
  10. Loosen spring mounting bolts.
  11. If equipped, disconnect ABS wiring connections at axle.
  12. Support axle with suitable jack.
  13. Remove spring-to-shackle attaching bolts and lower spring to the floor.
  14. Remove axle assembly.
  15. Reverse procedure to install.

Front Axle Notes
  1. Raise and support vehicle at frame behind front springs.
  2. Remove front wheels.
  3. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle yoke for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft at axle yoke.
  4. Disconnect connecting rod at steering knuckles.
  5. Disconnect shock absorbers at axle housing.
  6. Remove stabilizer bar connecting links to spring tie plates attaching bolts, if equipped.
  7. Disconnect breather tube at axle housing.
  8. Disconnect stabilizer bar link bolts at spring clips.
  9. Remove disc brake calipers, rotors and brake shields.
  10. Remove U-bolts and tie plates.
  11. Support axle assembly with suitable jack to relieve spring tension.
  12. Loosen rear spring shackle to spring attaching bolts.
  13. Remove front spring shackle to spring attaching bolts and lower spring to floor.
  14. Remove axle from under vehicle.
  15. Reverse procedure to install.

Rear Axel Seal Leaking, How do I pull the axel to repair?


You will need to remove the differential rear cover,drain fluid, remove wheel, brake drum, (rotor) . Unbolt center diff. pin, carefully remove (don't loose shims) push axle in remove lock keeper, then slide out axle, replace seal, put some grease on it, slide axle in reverse all to install.

Brake line hose has hole in it


The only real solution to your problem is to replace the damaged line, bleed the brakes, and check for leaks after you are done. The line should go up to the frame, and go into a small metal bracket that is welded to the frame. The hose is usually held in place by a small metal clip, and a steel brake line will thread into the end of the hose assy. where it terminates in the frame mounted brakcet.
