Question about 2003 Ford Escort

2 Answers

Serpentine belt keeps slipping off when it rains.

2003 Escort Zx2.
I had the serpentine belt replaced back in Jan. '08.
Ever since, every time it's driven through puddles of water, the belt comes off.

I've had it checked by a mech twice and they cannot find the problem. All the pulleys are good and everything is aligned right they say, but it keeps doing it.

It's raining here today and I hadn't even driven it yet. When I started it up, sure enough, the belt popped right off.

Please help

I have had the same trouble with my 2002 zx2. I have had to reinstall or replace the serpentine belt 4 or 5 times in less than a year. I have replaced the idler bearing and then the water pump went out which took out the belt as well. The belt still came off after replacing those items when I hit another puddle of water. I found that proper installation of the plastic engine splash guards which bolt to the bottom around the motor play an important roll in keeping out road water. Since the pulleys are accessible with the right front tire removed, I focused on securing the plastics tightly around the wheelwell framework. This has helped extremely in keeping water away from the pulleys. I haven't had any more troubles in the last 7 or 8 months. I'm still leary when driving in the rain as the routing of the serpentine belt on this car is the worst I've ever encountered.
Bottom line, check/replace idler bearing, tensioner if needed and make sure all plastic splash guards are there and properly screwed to the frame and each other.
Hope this helps.

Check to ensure the shims on the lower drive pully(engine) are iin fact in place and also check to see than the wheel is not installed backwards front to rear. a carpenters level can be used to ensure proper alingment after that it's probaly a bad tension pulley

2003 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L engine knock and no power.

Get yourself a compression tester and remove all spark plugs and proceed to check the compression for this motor the readings should all be above 110 psi, the car may have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and requires a new belt to be installed.

Serpentine belt replacement

2.0L Engines
See Figures 11, 12 and 13
The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner.
Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension.
The belt tensioner has a belt length indicator. If the indicator marks are not between the MIN and MAX marks, the belt must be replaced.
