Engine starts and shuts off

98 ford explorer, 4.0 engine. give it a little gas and it runs fine untill you let off the gas. usualy when it warms up or you take it for a ride and run the heck out of it for a short distance it will work ok, dose not do it every time you run the car My 1999 Windstar starts but I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the RPM`s up or else it just dies. What should I be doing to correct this problem?

I have a 2001 Windstar and the engine cuts off while i'm driving or when I put my foot on the brake. The EGR sensor was replaced but the problem still persists. This is a great concern of mine because this can happen anywhere and at anytime. I'm scared to put my children in the car and I can't seem to find a solution to this problem. I NEED HELP IN THE WORST WAY

I've had the same problem with having to keep my foot on the gas on a 2000 windstar and it turned out to be bad plugs. After multiple different types were put in I learned that these engines burn extremely hot and require a plug that can withstand much higher temps.

You need to clean the throtle body and the idle air control motor .clean it with throtle body cleaner and an old tooth brush take off the tube to your throtle plate assembly open it up by hand spray cleaner brush with tooth brush wipe out with clean rag install tube make sure all your sensor are pluged in start the car let it run till it clears out . if that dont fix it install a new idle air control. let me know how you come out

SOURCE: engine starts and shuts off

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

1997 ford explorer V6. Engine was idling to warm up, went in house for 10 minutes. Came out engine smoking knocking like crazy. Shut off engine and opened hood, oil was sprayed all over engine oil...

this sounds like the engine oil cooler hose was leaking.

DO NOT run the engine again until you fill with oil.

start the engine and look for the hose that is leaking.
