Intermitent loud clunk in front end while in four wheel drive

I have a Ford 1989 for F150 4x4. When I put it into four wheel drive mode I get a very loud clunk in the front end. It sounds like a gear slipping. This happens while on payvment and while in off road conditions. Any idea what this could be?

May be the locking hub. Do not drive this vehicle on dry pavement in four wheel drive.

the actuator for the hub locking is faulty and not engaging the hub correctly. There may be badly worn teeth to engage or broken parts in the hub.
Have an accredited drive line shop check it out.

Noise in front diff

Three probable issues;
1-The transfer case is low or out of fluid.
2-The drive shaft may be out of alignment due to worn front or back U joints (thus the clunk on shift)
3-the shift lever is out of alignment with the shift mechanism on the transmission housing.

Clunking from front end in 2WD

ASE mechanic here:
check the king pins in the front end and the u joints for any kind of play. sounds like front end play while four wheel drive is engaged and stills is affected for a while when two wheel drive is activated. this year truck most definitely has a manual four wheel linkage that could be the problem too. try lubing up any moving linkage and i would shift it in neutral. keep me posted

Rear end thumping noise

Depending on the year of your gto it could be a buggered CV joint on one of your back wheels. All GTO/3000GT are four wheel drive but up to the mid to late 90's they had four wheel steering. The usual symptoms of a buggered CV joint are loud rattling and/or vibrating from the affected wheel at around 30 - 40 mph and often a loud clunk when cornering at low speed
