the solenoid is on the starter motor.it could be just bad contacts in the solenoid and the extra amp supply by boosting the car will make the solenoid work.make sure all the connections at the battery and the starter is good.if they are good then change the starter with the solenoid.the starter should be on the side of the motor by the rad where the motor bolts to the transmission.

Did you also change the starter solenoid when you changed the starter? That is a possible cause.

Can you turn the engine over by hand from the crankshaft pulley to make sure the engine is not frozen or blocked? You will need a large socket to do that, but if you can't turn the engine over by hand, the starter won't be able to turn the flywheel either. The one click is probably the solenoid firing the starter piston to the flywheel but then nothing makes me think the engine is frozen in some way.

But if the starter and solenoid and battery is trying to turn a frozen flywheel, you should notice some drawdown of light intensity. Do you notice any change?

I would check all the wires going down to the starter. Make sure it is getting 12V. Make sure your wires on the starter are connected tight and they are none that is loose. The starter may not be contacting the flywheel. You might have a piece missing, causing it to slip. Check your starter solenoid. You could try the ignition fuse, it wouldn't hurt. I would check all the wires first. If it is not getting 12V all the time, it is not going to run right. You might have a loose wire down there somewhere. Mia, check all your connection ends. Make sure all the starter wires are connected. May be one loose. Mia, if you need anything, please let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

93 ford bronco changed the starter and the battery shows good charge but all we get is a clicking sound for the starter and sylinoid

is the starter sub solenoid ok? jump directly across it, it is located on the inside of the fender, the positve battery cable goes to it and then down to the starter, also are you sure the engine turns free.

Need a diagram showing where the starter is at on a 1998 Dodge Intrepid. I believe the one on my stepson's car needs replaced. Thank you.

Open hood. Looking down on the engine, it is on the lower part of the engine where the transmission and engine meet.
Follow the red battery cable. It is connected to the starter solenoid / relay switch (also known as the starter switch). The solenoid is sitting on top of the starter.
How certain are you that the starter needs to be replaced? Doe sit start if you boost the battery?

Try this test:
Turn ON headlights and try to start car.
1. headlights turn OFF completely when you try to start car: means tha th e battery connections need cleaning. Remove the battery cables and clean the cable clamps and the battery posts.
2. Headlights dim really low means: The battery needs to be charged up or replaced.
3. No change in headlight brightness means: solenoid needs replacing; perhaps the starter.

Please let us know... trying to save you some $$ and lots of work.

1994 pathfinder not starting

Sounds like the starter needs a freshen up.
Solenoid should be the problem and when you jump the lugs on the start you are bypassing the solenoid .The solenoid is the little cylinder attached to the starter motor.
Contacts will be stuffed.
Hope this helps.

1998 subaru clicks when starting

The starter solenoid is clicking so your ignition switch is okay. You've changed the starter? Apparently the solenoid is separate from the starter. Check that the wire from the solenoid to the starter is intact and make sure the ends are nice and shiny. Then it's probably the solenoid itself. Some cars have a fused wire, notably older Fords where the wire itself is a fuse. Your "Snubaru" dealer can tell you.
