I bought a 05 impala from a used car dealer & the first day I freaked out because I thought the engine was overheating, but when I checked under the trunk everything was fine. I was afraid to drive it though. So I was glad to find that the problem is just a faulty gauge connection & not something more serious.

I have the same problem. It seemed the temperature gauge are not replacement. I don't know how it is working. I just turn on and off the sometimes the ignition, making the temperature gauge to get replacement. Maybe the problem is going to come back after somedays. Anyway the engine is working well.

I have the same problem with my 02 Impala. I replace the thermstatic. When I start the car in the morning, The gauge goes to hot until heat comes out. I am not losing any antifreeze. Whats wrong??

Gauge says car is overheating, took it to chevy, they could not get it to overheat. Finally told me gauge is not working properly. They need to take off dashboard and try to trace problem, they think it may be a faulty wire, and want to charge 100.00 per hour to try and figure it out, no guarantee that they will. I don't have that kind of money.

my temp guage has been acting real stupid about a year already. I always just click the key on and off really fast about 15 to 30 times and watch the guage gradually go back to normal. I'm tired of it so I'm gonna try the stepper motor dealio. thanks

There is a temperature sensor likely to be on your radiator. Make sure the connection is plugged in. Sometimes un-plugging and plugging it back will correct the issue. If not, you'll have to have some check if the sensor is faultly or if the electric wire is fault. You can check your fuse box. I don't think it's a fuse because other things on your instrument cluster would also not work.

I had the same problem and I got it fixed by going to http://www.instrumentclusters.com/. It cost $235 for EVERYTHING. I just need to get the electrical system fixed. I'll start by replacing the fuses, and hopefully that alone should do it!

I have a 2005 impala v6 and the fuel and temperature gauges show the needles all over the place. Don't even know where to start. Any ideas? The speedometer works just fine.

The ground connection to your instrument cluster has failed. Try running a separate ground connection to a different chassis ground point.

Why did this happen all of a sudden, Overheating (maybe) and RPM Sensor Pointing down?

If the noise was coming from the cooling system, first try to replace the radiator or expansion bottle pressure cap. The RPM needle probably is unrelate to the cooling system problem.

Temperature gauge not working

Common problem with 2000-2005 Impalas. Stepper motors (motor that controls pointer needle) on cluster circuit board were a defective design. Find a gauge repair service locally or on the web. Repair can be done at a reasonable price. Avoid dealership if possible. They will charge in the $450-550 range. Good luck. Ron @ Speed-O-Repair.

Tempature gauge goes to hot side when the air

your car is overheating...when your car is cool, check level of radiator should be up to the top. Start car and let idle till it gets hot, put hand on upper radiator hose..it should be hot, if its not, your thermostat is stuck closed and this could lead to "head gasket damage" if left in this condition. when you select the heater position.. "this is the correct thing to do in any car that is overheating".. because it takes the water from that system and dumps it into the engine coolant system and helps to cool it down a little bit. So remember when your overheating turn on the heater system till you can pull off the road and get the coolant system checked. can i get a very helpful.

Temperature gauge red lined then dropped back down

more than likely but if the temp gets to high you run an extremely high risk of blowing a head gasket or warping or cracking the head.So have it changed out before driving the car much more and also have the water pump checked.

I had the same problem with my 2004 yukon. It seems all the gauges in the insturment cluster are known to go bad from 2003-2006 in GMC and Chevys. The deaerships are trying to sell you a new instrument cluster which is pretty costly if your warrenty is up. I repaired the circuit board on my insturment cluster myself and everything is working fine now. Since hearing abouth this problem I have started repairing the insturment cluster as a side business. If your vehicle is out of warrenty and your intersted shoot me an e-mail (ryanfeider@hotmial.com).
