I have the exact same problem. It fires for an instant but won't continue running. It finally started after about 40 times and was fine for about a month but now it's doing it again.

It has been doing this for about 3 years now. I live in Florida and if it is hot out the Suburban will stall several times. After I let it sit 20-30 minutes it seems to run okay. One day it did it to me 4 times. Can't trust the SUV on long trips and that is why I bought the SUV. I have changed the fuel filter, got new wires and spark plugs. This year it seems to be the worst. I would hate to waste my money if it turned out not to be the fuel pump.

I live in NJ. 2003 Chevy Suburban 1500. 6ys old. 106,010 miles. Been maintained well throughout. 2nd time in 3 weeks that truck turns on, starts then shuts off. When happened first time thought it was due to extremely cold weather & car sitting for 3 days. It started after 10 attempts. Now, the weather about 50 and truck doing same thing but but wont stay running. Called a few mechanics & they tell me its either relay switch or fuel pump. Dont want to spend money for nothing, esp on fuel pump. Anybody have any idea cause Im strapped for cash?

2003 suburban has been siting for 3 years and now won't start. I can hear fuel pump working when key is ON. Battery is charged. What could it be? It cranks over like no fuel or spark getting to it

If it's been sitting for 3 years I would do as follows
1. Drain tank of all gas, give it some fresh gas.
2. Change the Spark Plugs
Attempt to start it. (Keep in mind it may take a few times to get all that old gas out of the lines)
Sitting it the worst thing for a rig. I advise never let it go without starting it ATLEAST once a month
If that doesn't work make sure it is getting fuel to the motor.
If so it could be your Distributor or Coil. Good luck

You might have a defective fuel tank pressure sensor!

98 Chevy Suburban. Turns over great, runs for a second then dies. If i....keep....trying it does the same and then eventually stays running. I hear the fuel pump and the fuel filter has been replaced. Any...

If you can, check the fuel pump pressure. The Votec engines are real sensitive to the right amount fuel pressure. If the pump is getting weak, it will cause the symptoms you are describing.

1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

I assume the fuel pump fuse is good?
The only time voltage will be sent to the fuel pump will be the first 2 to 3 seconds if the starter is not engaged. You will want to crank the engine over and check for voltage on the load side of the relay, circuit #30 at the relay.
Let me know after you check.

replace your MAP sensor(manifold absolute pressure) the map sensor is the computer for your fuel pressure regulator telling how much pressure. Unless your tahoe runs like **** going up hill than it inevitably your fuel pump

200 Chevy Suburban -- trouble starting

Bad fuel pressure regulator. Located on drivers side of engine on fuel rail. Cost of part is around $70. Easy to replace. Buy the part, look at it, find the old one on the engine in the area described above. Pull the vacuum line off of it, if you see any fuel in the vacuum line it's bad. The vacuum line sucks up the fuel flooding the engine. Classic symptoms. Make sure to relieve the fuel pressure prior to removing or let it sit for a couple of hours, or over night. The leak will relieve the pressure over time. Simple clip holds it on, easy to get at. Make sure to remove both "O" rings prior to putting new unit on. Should solve the problem.
