I have a 1989 S-10 Blazer 4.3L 4x4 2dr and I am having the same issue. When I put it in 4Lo, it locks but does not engage and when I put it in 4Hi, it doesn't lock into position and it just slips right back into 2Hi. My friends told me that it could be just the pins inside could be bent and keeping it from actually engaging but I am really not sure. Any Advice????

the vacuum hose's lockes the hubs, the transfer case is engaged by means of an actuator motor, which is your problem?

  • laz lan May 11, 2010

vac hose from intake goes to swich on t-case,which may be bad.
from t-case two come out,one goes directly to vac-moter under batt.
you can or should be able to "press"vac diaphram to see if acuating cable to front axle is stuck or not.

also see if it pulls in while motor is running.
ALL hoses MUST be good for all to work!

SOURCE: s10 4x4 wont work

check the fuses supplying the front viscous-coupling system solenoids, there should be at least one fuse for this marked AWD or 4WD. Also the locking hubs or the front differential may be damaged from engaging 4x4 while moving.

If it is an auto then the fuse or box fluid levels are likely areas to check.

If the fuse is found to be intact, check the relays click when 4x4 is selected, and replace the necessary relay if it does not operate.

You will need the service manual for your car to locate and identify the correct electrical equipment for the 4x4 function.

SOURCE: hot front wheels

Jack up the front of vehicle and put in on stands. Check and see if both wheels turn freely by hand. If not, try loosening off brake line at master cylinder - bigger reservoir to relieve brake pressure. See if this helps. If relieving the pressure helps you will have to replace the master cylinder.

The light come on for the 4wd on my 93 dodge Dakota le but will not shirt in

Check the two vacuum hoses on the right
front side, of the front axle housing

You can use a hand held vacuum gauge, to check
the vacuum modulator & see if it will lock the front axle

Have to have the front end up in air & supported &
turn wheel/tire by hand, as you apply vacuum

Keep in mind with 4 wheel drive, only the right rear &
left front are driven wheels, not all 4

If the front axle locks in, with you pulling a vacuum & you have no
vacuum at the front hoses, then go to the transfer shifter & next to
it,is the vacuum switch

Front right side is making a grinding noise while in two wheel, sounds like 4 wheel drive wont disengage all the way. took hub off everything looks ok. heard that it could be a vacuum problem. did notice...

Could either be a bad vacuum line or the TSB for the IWE solenoid.

If you have the truck running in park ( parking brake, chock wheels, necessary safety precautions ) check the vacuum on the front right IWE vacuum line. there are 2 vacuum hoses on there, 1 is the vac, the other is the vent, which routes up into the engine compartment, and is not hooked to anything.

Usually if it is the TSB, both sides will be making the grinding noise, as they are a common IWE solenoid

TSB : http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/file_tsb06_08_15.pdf

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vacuum is removed the spring engages the IWE.

4 wheel drive will not engage on my 1989 gmc sierra 2500?

actually that first soultion is wrong it is correct on smaller pickups but on the full size pick ups they use a differnet sytem
there a electric actuator on front axle
there be two elctrical plugs on front axle u want the bigger of the two other one is just to turn the 4 wheel drive light on
un plug actuator then remove actuator after it removed plug it back in but leave it out of axle turn key on and shift down to 4 wheel drive the actuator should move out if it dont that your problem if i does move this isnt your problem it either the tranfer case or in front axle

When I shift to 4 wheel drive the indicator light comes on but the front wheels do not lock. If you manually lock the front hubs the 4 wheels lock and work fine. what is the fix for this problem.

The autolocking hubs are vacuum actuated. If they don't lock then you most likely have a vacuum leak somewhere. This usually occurs where the vacuum line (black rubber hose) attaches to the knuckle on the inside of each front wheel. These hoses get dry and crack. Another simptom of this leak is the AC changing from front vents to defrost vents when you switch to 4x4 so check for this. You could also have a vacuum leak in the hub diaphragm or one of the orings in the hub could be cracked or broken. If you cannot find a vacuum leak then the vacuum solonoid valve may be bad.

4 wheel drive not engaging

I do not have a vacuum diagram for the 89 Cherokee, but my 89 had the same issue several times and all it was is that the block of vacuum lines that go into the front axle on the rear of the axle on the passenger side of the vehicle. I ended up having to put a zip tie around the axle and hose block to hold it on. Have not had the issue again since doing this. Hope that helps.
