SkyActiv engines, regardless of displacement, never fill completely (according to the dipstick) using the recommended fill volume. Your experience using 5 full quarts in a 2.5 liter is exactly what others have experienced.
Hi,I have same vehicle myself and I work at the Bmw dealer.
Officially the 3.0D takes 7 litres when you also change the filter.0fficially but in practise its a bit less as,some of the old oil will always be left behind.
Buy 2x 4 litre containers of 5w 30 or 0w40 ,pour in 6.5 litres ,start the engine and stopped it and wait 5 mins for the oil to drain to sump and check level. You will find that the dipstick is on the MIN mark and you just fill it up until slightly over the MED mark.
DONT overfill...best to run it on MIN than overfilled.
With or without a filter? Have you lost the dipstick? Fill it to the full mark, about 6 liters without filter, plus 1 litre to fill the oil filter. Run engine then check levels again. Try not to overfill the sump.
your best bet is to put in 3 quarts then see if there is anything showing on the dipstick if not add another quart at a time until you see something or it's at the fill level on the dipstick. when I do this I leave the dipstick either out completely or half out so oil doesn't splash up on it while pouring in that was I don't have to wipe it each time. typically from the bottom of the dipstick to the max fill line is one to 1.5 quarts, so don't worry about overfilling if you are checking between each quart. And if you buy 5 quarts and you have an extra, just save it for the next oil change.
I would bet you drained the transmission oil and not the engine oil. It is a pretty common mistake.
How much oil did you add when you where done. is the oil level on the oil dipstick now reading overfilled? Is there any fluid on the transmission dipstick?
LS1 4.8 5.3 6.0 takes around 6 liters with oil filter. put 5 liters then run for 60 secs let sit for 5 mins then top it up till it reads full on the dipstick .( DO NOT OVERFILL)
1998 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 1.8L 4-cyl Engine Code AEB/AWM Turbo Models with 1.8L Engine codes AEB, ATW, AUG, AWM only use engine oil that is formulated to meet Volkswagen oil standard VW 502.00 (with viscosity of SAE 5W-40, 5W-30 or 0W-40).
CAPACITIES:
Engine, with filter..........3.5 liter To prevent overfilling during oil changes, add 0.5 liter (0.5 quart) less than capacity shown, start engine, let run until engine operating temperature is approx. 60 °C (140 °F) , switch engine off, wait 3 minutes, check dipstick, fill to full mark as indicated on dipstick (may be more or less than 0.5 liter (0.5 quart) depending on model).
As for the sludge question, I add Marvel Mystery Oil around 600 miles before i do my oil change. This will clean out the oil pick up screen and oil journals through out the engine, I do this on every oil change and i have over 356,000 miles on my engine. Oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles intervals. Good luck and hope this helps.
