Alternator tests good, but lights flicker dim, and wont charge battery

I replaced the alternator on my 2000 cougar because it was not charging. the car is basically doing the same thing, and when you take the positive cable loose from the battery, it goes dead. sitting still@ idle, it seems fine, but going down the road, the battery light flashes and the lights, both interior and exterior flash bright to dim.

In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is

what probley happened the alternator started to heat up alittle to much and caused the belt to spin on the pulley i would go ahead and get the alternator replaaced as soon as possible. as for the lights dimming and the gauges not working you was running off your battery making the vehicle mess up i would also get your battery checked while your at it.

If you get no red light for the battery charging system the charging system will not work. The indicator light initally excites the field to start charging.

2000 Mercury Cougar flickering lights. The alternator is overcharging.

NO ENGINE TOLD ! 2.0 OR 2.5LITER?????????
TH 8TH DIGIT OF YOUR VIN TELLS YOU WHICH ENGINE IS THERE, PLEASE TELL THAT FIRST.
The alternator is overcharging. what makes you think so?
a meter test.?
scan tool shows DTC that said that>?
OK JUST FLICKER,
lights flicker, what light, heads, or charge lamp error
or what? (i guess all)
putting in 3 wrong alternators is painful , there are 2 used, here. on 2 engines
one is pcm controls, other is not.
The 2 engines and matching ALTs:

DURATEC -VE 2.5LITER ONLY

ZETEC-VCT 2.0L ONLY

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. ALT ! NOR ENGINES

DURA HAS 3 FUSES TO BLOW. BOTH ALTS USE THESE FUSES
F30-CJB. 7.5a, CENTERAL JUNCTION BOX.
and F2 =BJB, 15AMP BATTERY JUNC. BOX BJB
AND FB 175 AMP
THE REG IS INSIDE THE ALT HERE, NOT PCM

DID YOU REPLACE THE ALT WITH THE NEG LUG ATTACHED, IF YES, THE 175AMP FUSE IS BLOWN BOOM

ZETEC USES PCM REGULATION

AND SAME 3 FUSES TO FAIL, 1,2,3..

THE 175 FUSE MUST BE GOOD. TOO.

THE CORRECT GENERATOR FOR YOU ENGINE MUST BE USED
THE DURA and zetec alternator gens can NOT be mixed up here ever!

best way to buy any alt is by VIN # code or fail 1/2 the time or even 3times in row. or 175amp is blown
if buying over the counter (a new alt) tell them there 2 kinds used in 2000, tell them the vin 8th code.

Dashlights and radio flicker and battery light come on

It could be a couple things. Take it to a shop or a place like auto zone and have them test the alternator and the battery, its free :) If they both are testing as good, the next thing would be to check the battery terminals and connections. It simply is not getting the enough charge back to the battery for one reason or another.

My 2000 Mercury Cougar was not charging, so I changed the alternator and battery. Now, I still have the same problem. When I take the battery cable off to see if the alternator is charging the car dies....

Well that is a good and easy test. The alternator you just replaced is probably bad. Once the vehicle starts its the alternator's job to keep the vehicle running. You need to take that alternator back to the auto parts store and exchange it for a good working one.

I hope this helps you out, if it does please give me a YES that I did help you correct your problem. Thank you.

Must be electrical problem

Suggest replacing the the switch for the headlights or the switch for the dimmer...doesn't sound like it's your charging system, but more like a switch. There are probably relays involved too, usually in the Fuse Box, that may be suspect.

Good luck,

Battery and brake lights flicker and headlights dim

Sounds like a low voltage problem, alternator not charging properly. When you press the gass the motor takes more juice from your battery to fire the spark plugs have you had your charging system tested (most auto parts places do it for free)? Either that or a loose wire causing the short. Check all grounds under the hood and make sure they all have a good contact

My 2000 Mercury Cougar starts ok then after a few minutes the dash gages drop to zero then starts to struggle to keep running then dies and will not restart unless I charge the battery. I was told maybe...

check fuses alternator fuse ,charge fuse.also if that checks out look at the harness for back of alternator is it in bad shape? is there a large wire by it self bolted on the alternator? if so take a wire ,same size, and bolt it on with that wire and run it directley to the positive battery post this will charge battery for now on,but if u dont have a large wire bolted on alternator ,the larger wire that is pluged into the alternator is the same wire ,tie into this wire really good and do the same (run to battery positive post) make sure this plug in is good ,if not u can purchase this at the zone
