Question about Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

1995 Pontiac Grand Prix: All but 2 lug nuts are off flat tire (wheel), but remaining two are severely stripped. The design of the factory wheel makes it very difficult to grip on lug with anything. Any suggestions? Help!

Use a air hammer or stop by your local garage and they should have a tool to help you.

Cannot remove stripped lug nuts.2006 Impala 3.9 V-6 aluminum alloy wheels.

Forget removing tire from its current position. Taking it off without the right tools is next to impossible and ............

Bang the lug nuts with a nice lump hammer to loosen up any corrosion. Then try heating the nuts with a torch, and with a good pair of vise grips and and an extension for them loosen the nuts to remove the rim.

Lug nut issues

Your factory custom wheels are designed to use a specific lug nut, most of these lugnuts today include a built in washer that contacts the wheel surface. Your maintenance of re-torqueing the lugnuts after 100 miles following wheel removal is exceptional, and textbook...(some wheel manufacturers recommend this after 50 miles:) I am a long time wheel person through many years of performance wheel applications. My guess would be that a previous owner had installed custom wheels, and removed them at time of selling your Santa Fe...they mistakenly left the aftermarket lug nuts on your car...and these lug nuts do not contact your wheel where they should be to remain tightened...Don't buy new lug nuts unless you can test this possibility first...All salvage yards would have inventory of factory wheels and lugnuts...Also shop on line...confirm the size of your wheel studs...ie 12 mm rht..."right hand thread" and search for someone selling factory wheels...many auto parts stores will confirm your wheel stud thread size any offer replacement sets too. Hope this helps.

Lugnuts are stripped on the drivers side front rim and the tire is completely shredded

Generally you can use a smaller socket on the lugs, If you have deep set lugs (aluminum wheels) You will need to use a 1/2" extension and socket. Pick one that needs to be hammered on to the nut, then after it's off, use a smaller extension to drive it out (3/8) If I remember correctly after the tin cover on the lug falls off, the socket size is 17mm.

I need to know what are the bolts are called that the lug nuts go on a vehicle? I thought that it was the rotor. Mine has stripped.

You require "lug studs" to be able to install a lug nut to secure the tire.

You will need a special tool to press the lug studs in and out of the flange, or you can follow these directions;

First you will have to pound the broken lug stud(s) out of the wheel hub, use a punch or a drift that is a little smaller in diameter than the lug stud, and be sure that you do not pound on the flange itself, then you will need a lug nut and about a half an inch thick of flat washers.

1. Insert the new lug stud through the wheel hub from behind so that the threaded end is facing out towards you and then put some grease on the threads.

2. Then slip the flat washers onto the lug stud followed by the lug nut, and run the lug nut down backwards with the flat end of the lug nut towards the flat washers to take up the slack and use plenty of grease on the threads.

3. Then using a breaker bar tighten the lug nut until it pulls the lug stud through the wheel hub and it is flush with the wheel hub.

Be sure that the amount of flat washers used will make up for any non-threaded part of the lug stud that might stick out past the wheel hub preventing the lug nut from pulling the lug stud all the way through the wheel hub, and basically you do not want the lug nut to run out of threads before it can pull the lug stud flush with the wheel hub.

Let me know if you require any further assistance.

I have a 96 grand prix and my driver side tire lug nuts keep loosining up on me and damaged all the lugs, they are poppin off. How do i fix this

You will probably have to remove all the studs and put new ones in. They are probably damaged beyond repair now. Take your wheel off, and just slam them with a hammer. They'll pop out the back. To install new ones, just put them through the holes from the back, and then pull them through by tightening the wheel nut. You will probably have to take the brake assembly off to make room to remove and replace the studs.

I am trying to remove the lug nut stud plate to replace the lug nut studs.

If you have the time let it sit overnight or longer, giving it another spray occasionally. It works best when it's given time to soak in. 2 other ways to remove that have worked for me. Get someone to help for this. While putting pressure (to loosen) on a breaker bar w/ socket, have someone give the top of the socket a good whack with a hammer. Try several times, it may break it free. 2nd way is to put socket and breaker bar on and with a couple of firm hits on the end (handle end) of breaker bar, hit in the tighten direction, then do the loosen direction. This can also break it free. Best way is with an air gun. I can't believe how easy bolts come off that seemed impossible when doing it with just human power.
