Why am I hearing boom boom noise when it's running?

As the boom boom is coming from the motor/exhaust, could be several things...dirty gas, bad plugs, bad spark plug wires, dirty/clogged air filter...How long since a tune-up?

I have a 2008 Saturn Astra Xr its making a grinding noise what could it be if it's not the brakes or rotors.

It could be worn out constant velocity joints, if it is noisy only at slow speeds, and turning makes it happen too, get them checked asap.

Differential noise

indicates axle bearing failure rather than diff problems
diff failure is indicated by a growling noise on acceleration or deceleration or a constant harmonic hum while driving at a steady speed
from your description of where the noise is most pronounced indicates wheel bearings

Micra K13 Loud Noise at Higher Speeds

I've just bought a K13 Nissan Micra and it doesn't sound quite right. The noise I hear also seems to be coming from the back but it sounds like when you chop down a gear in a manual going down a hill and the engine revvs, well this is the noise I get in the automatic speeding up and slowing down, even just cruising at a steady speed. Any ideas people? Apart from this noise I love this car.

When putting on brakes, car makes a boom boom noise and shakes. The wheels on the front move if you shake them back and fourth. Is that my ball joints?

It's worse than ball joints, it's CV joints. Constant Velocity joints. They're the flex joints that connect wheels to driveshaft to transmission. Since your car is front wheel drive... take it to a shop and have them do the work... it requires specialty tools and is not an easy fix.

Rearend prob.[noise]

Here are the common causes or rear end noises
Constant high pitched whine at all speeds: Pinion Bearings or Ring gear carrier bearings
Whine at steady speeds or whines on deceleration: Rear end gear set is worn and will need to be replaced.
Rumbling type of noises are caused by wheel bearings or a tire with a separated cord.
